PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Haka Maka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lj Gibbs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maka comes to the cage accompanied by Island Music. Gibbs comes into a darkened arena with his song building. LJ Gibbs kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Haka Maka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lj Gibbs!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gibbs fails with the takedown
and Maka counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Gibbs shoots and misses
and Gibbs takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Gibbs has his takedown stuffed
and Maka connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Haka Maka has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Lj Gibbs.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Maka!
Maka connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Gibbs momentarily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Maka has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Gibbs is trying to keep an underhook but Maka manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Gibbs has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Maka is working away from the top position though.
Gibbs wants to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maka is looking to take a break and control but Gibbs is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Maka is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Gibbs is trying to get back to full guard.
Maka looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Haka Maka.
Maka throws a nice inside leg kick.

Gibbs gets tackled into the cage by Maka. Maka maintains the clinch.

Maka escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Maka shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gibbs is trying to defend but Maka finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Gibbs keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Maka wants to control but Gibbs is keeping him busy.

Maka is working for a kimura but Gibbs is defending it quite comfortably.
Gibbs trying to control but Maka postures up.
Gibbs keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Maka passes to side control.

Gibbs is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The ground and pound from Maka seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Gibbs is not content to let Maka control the position.
Gibbs wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Maka is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Gibbs has escaped the position, nice work there.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gibbs tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Gibbs avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Maka.

Maka is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Gibbs knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Gibbs stuck in half guard on the bottom here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Haka Maka dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Maka misses with a combination

and Gibbs counters with a shoot takedown. Maka fights it but they end up in guard.
Gibbs wants to control from the top but Maka keeps moving.
Gibbs looking to sit in guard and control but Maka gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gibbs trying to keep a closed guard but Maka is proving a slippery customer.

Maka drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Gibbs dives on top into guard.

Gibbs drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Maka manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gibbs has Maka in his guard.
Maka trying to control the position from guard on top but Gibbs is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gibbs is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Maka is controlling him.

Maka throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Maka drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gibbs manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Maka has Gibbs in his guard.
Gibbs throws a strike but Maka rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Gibbs working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Maka doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Maka manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Maka gets to his feet - Gibbs follows without any prompting.
Gibbs looks to clinch

and Maka counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Haka Maka overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Maka gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Gibbs gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Maka counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Gibbs wants to clinch.
Maka shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gibbs pinned against the cage. Gibbs gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maka fails in his attempt to clinch.
Maka goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Maka scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Maka prevents Gibbs from standing back up.
Gibbs works his way to full guard. Good work.
Gibbs keeping moving, preventing Maka from controlling successfully.

Maka gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gibbs fails with the takedown

and Maka decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Gibbs's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Haka Maka dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Maka blocks a head kick by Gibbs.

Gibbs shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Maka looking for a guillotine here but Gibbs defends easily.
Gibbs stops Maka from standing up.
Gibbs trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Maka is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Maka pulls Gibbs in close to prevent any damage.

Gibbs trying to control the position from guard on top but Maka is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gibbs sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Gibbs trying to control but Maka is working from the bottom.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Lj Gibbs wasn't active enough on the ground.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Maka.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gibbs misses with a takedown attempt

and Maka counters with a nice double leg into side control. Gibbs won't be happy with that.
Maka tries to move into full mount but can't pass Gibbs's legs.
Gibbs defending against the ground and pound.
Gibbs is trying to buck Maka off.

Maka decides to stand up, so the ref orders Gibbs to his feet.
Gibbs throws a one two combo.
Maka swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Gibbs holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Maka is leaning against Gibbs and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Maka throws an elbow that misses.

Gibbs jumps guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gibbs utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Maka trying to control but Gibbs is working from the bottom.
Maka looking to sit in guard and control but Gibbs gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Gibbs stays in close to Maka's body and controls the position.
Gibbs wants to control from the top but Maka keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gibbs is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Lj Gibbs hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Gibbs tries to clinch but Maka moves away

and Maka counters with a shoot takedown. Gibbs fights it but they end up in guard.
Gibbs is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Gibbs keeping moving, preventing Maka from controlling successfully.
Gibbs controls Maka momentarily but Maka frees himself.

And that's the end of the fight!
Haka Maka showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Maka has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
