Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Paul!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Eli Gull!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gull fails with the takedown.
Paul misses with a lunging right hand

and Gull counters with a nice double leg into side control. Paul won't be happy with that.
Gull throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Paul tries to bench press Gull off him but Gull keeps the position.

Gull goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Paul rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Gull's guard! Nice work there by Paul!
Paul has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gull is proving hard to escape from.
Gull looking for a sweep. Not yet Gull, not yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gull pulls Paul in to control the position.

Gull wriggles free and stands up.
Gull looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Paul swings widly with a right hand

and Gull decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Paul's guard.
Gull trying to control the position from guard on top but Paul is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gull pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Paul is keeping the position for now.
Gull is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Gull gets to his feet. Paul looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Gull doesn't manage to clinch there - Paul circles away.
Eli Gull seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gull doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Paul counters with a one-two to the body.
John Paul has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eli Gull.
Gull ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Gull shoots in and gets a takedown into Paul's guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gull advances position into side control!
Paul on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Paul tries to get out of the position.

Gull is trying to get an arm triangle but Paul is defending well.

Gull tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gull is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Paul has escaped the position, nice work there.
Gull trying to control the position but Paul is working away.
Paul is trying to control Gull's posture but Gull avoids it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gull remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Gull trying to control the position but Paul is working away.

Gull is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Paul is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gull in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Eli Gull dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Gull tries for a takedown but Paul circles away easily
and Paul connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Gull ducks under a wild hook from Paul.

Gull shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Gull was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Gull unloads with some shots from mount but Paul bucks and avoids them well.
Gull wants to control the pace but Paul is squirming around nicely.
Gull avoids the attempt from Paul to control.
Paul is looking to get to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gull is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Paul is surviving well by controlling Gull's body position as best he can.
Paul is trying to escape the mount.
Paul is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Gull jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Paul manages to avoid the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Paul is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Gull has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Gull has hold of Paul's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Paul tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Gull cranks the arm and Paul screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Paul, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Eli Gull!
