PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Malik Turner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phil Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Phil Davis is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Malik Turner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phil Davis!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Alec Ball and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turner shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Davis shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Davis showed some decent athleticism there.
Turner is in trouble now - Davis has advanced to mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Davis controlling from mount.
Turner keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Davis looking to finish Turner with some ground and pound. This is bad for Turner!
Davis tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Turner wants to hold on but Davis pushes him away.
Davis putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!

Turner defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Davis.
Davis sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
It looks like Davis might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Davis's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Turner knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Davis on the ground.
Turner wants to hold on but Davis pushes him away.
Davis controlling from mount.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Phil Davis hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Davis shoots in looking for a takedown. Turner tries to sprawl out of it but Davis keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Turner manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Turner gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Davis is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Turner wants to sweep but no luck.
Davis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Davis postures up in Turner's guard and throws a big left but Turner blocks it.
Davis slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Phil Davis.
Davis fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Turner rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Davis moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Davis swats away the attempt to clinch by Turner.
Horrible takedown by Turner or perhaps it was just good defense by Davis which made him look bad.

Davis scores with a takedown into Turner's guard.
Davis is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phil Davis dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Turner tries for a takedown but Davis circles away easily

and Davis counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Davis's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Davis passes Turner's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Still in half guard, Davis seems content to control.
Let's hope that Davis has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Phil Davis.
The fight stays on the outside here - Turner looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Turner gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Davis decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Turner's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Davis accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Davis seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Turner looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Davis has picked Turner up and slammed him! Turner can't keep hold of the triangle and Davis manages to pass to side control!

Davis gets to mount! Turner was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.

Davis is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Turner to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Turner shrugs it off.
Turner is in a horrible position here. Davis smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Turner tries to lock up and control but Davis gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Davis cracks Turner with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Phil Davis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Turner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Davis has control of Turner's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Turner regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Davis is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Turner has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Turner!

Davis wriggles free and stands up.
Davis shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Turner pinned against the cage. Turner gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phil Davis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Turner's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Turner throws a sloppy head kick and Davis moves out of range easily.
Turner defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Davis.
Turner tries to clinch but Davis moves out of range.
Davis shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Turner pinned against the cage. Turner gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Davis fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Turner sprawls well initially but Davis persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Turner wants to control the action here but instead Davis manages to pass to full mount!
BOOM! Davis connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Davis content just to control the position here.

Turner tries to lock up and control but Davis gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Davis has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Turner's face.
Turner is in all sorts of trouble here.
Davis tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Davis takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Davis wants to finish this one by submission but Turner is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Davis.

Davis pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Turner wants to hold on but Davis pushes him away.
Davis controlling the pace for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
Phil Davis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Davis winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
