PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joseph Goss (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thiago Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Goss kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Sybreed: Emma-0. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joseph Goss!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Thiago Alves !
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Eliza Hachem and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alves shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Goss sprawls well. Goss wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Alves gets slowly back to his feet.
A jab lands there for Alves .
Goss darts in trying to clinch
and Alves counters with a two punch combo.
Goss wants to clinch
and Alves counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Goss tries a head kick but it misses.
Goss shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Alves sprawls well. Alves wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Goss gets slowly back to his feet.
Alves avoids the head kick by Goss.

and Goss counters with a low kick, right behind Alves 's knee.
Goss moves to clinch but Alves breaks away

and Alves counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Goss wants to sweep but no luck.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Goss is working hard here to advance position.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Alves 's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Alves trying to control but Goss is working from the bottom.
Alves tries to free his leg and advance position but Goss is retaining full guard.

Goss working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Alves doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Alves manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Goss has momentary wrist control but Alves slips an elbow through the middle.
Alves is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Goss is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Alves got a little sloppy there for a moment and Goss has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Alves has managed to get both his arms back between Goss's legs - danger averted.

Goss has his foot on Alves 's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Alves works his way back into a safe position though.
Alves controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Goss throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Alves escapes and throws Goss's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Goss is not content to let Alves control the position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Alves wants to lay and pray for a moment but Goss keeps working.

Alves is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Goss can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves lands a nice shot to the head.

Goss tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Alves can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Goss is looking to escape.

Alves has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Goss's face.
Goss is desperately trying to improve his position but Alves has a good base and remains in mount.
Alves has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Alves cracks Goss with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Goss is looking to improve his position but Alves isn't that keen on the idea.

Alves takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Goss is desperately trying to improve his position but Alves has a good base and remains in mount.
Alves lands a big elbow.
Alves has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Goss's face.
Goss is in all sorts of trouble here.
Alves lands with some strikes.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Alves wants to control the pace but Goss is squirming around nicely.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Goss drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Goss working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Goss creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Alves sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Goss isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Alves stacks Goss on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Alves !

Alves lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Thiago Alves is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Goss looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Alves has picked Goss up and slammed him! Goss can't keep hold of the triangle and Alves manages to pass to side control!

Thiago Alves comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Alves has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
