PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between nick diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derek Roy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Roy is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: "Wake Up" by Rage Against The Machine. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek Roy!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
diaz scores with a slapping inside leg kick.

diaz gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
diaz seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Roy postures up.
Roy stays in close to diaz's body and controls the position.
diaz is trying to keep Roy in close.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as diaz holds on and takes a little breather.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Roy trying to stand up but can't free himself from diaz's guard.
diaz is pulling down on Roy's head. It's preventing any offense from Roy, at least for the moment.
Roy is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Roy trying to control the position from guard on top but diaz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Roy stopping the sweep attempt from diaz.
diaz has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Roy has passed into side control.
Roy taking a breather here.
diaz regains half guard.
Roy perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Roy is looking to stall here but diaz recovers full guard.
diaz pulls Roy in close to prevent any damage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Roy would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
diaz keeping moving, preventing Roy from controlling successfully.
diaz keeping full guard, as Roy tries to pass.
diaz is trying to control the position but Roy postures up.
diaz is pulling down on Roy's head to control his posture.
Roy trying to control but diaz is working from the bottom.

diaz looking for a sweep. Not yet diaz, not yet.
diaz is breathing heavily.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Roy closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Roy lands in his opponent's guard.
diaz managing to control the position.
Roy would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
diaz looking to hit a scissor sweep but Roy is one step ahead there.
diaz trying to keep a closed guard but Roy is proving a slippery customer.

Roy is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

diaz is controlling Roy's posture.
diaz wants to sweep here but Roy controlling him for the moment.
diaz bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Roy's guard.

Roy had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. diaz is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Roy Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take diaz's back instead.
Roy doesn't have the hooks in and diaz manages to turn into his guard.
Roy manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. diaz manages to get himself to full guard.
diaz avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Roy trying to control the position from guard on top but diaz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derek Roy dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


diaz shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Roy counters with a nice double leg into side control. diaz won't be happy with that.

Roy is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, diaz has escaped the position, nice work there.
Roy happy to just control the position for now.
Roy lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear diaz down.


diaz is rocked!

Roy in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... diaz is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
