PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chris Rudd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Flare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rudd comes to the cage accompanied by Bob Marley - Get Up Stand Up. The crowd seem to be enjoying Flare's choice of entrance music: Also Sprach Zarathustra. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Chris Rudd!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Flare!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rudd throws a leg kick that is checked
and Flare counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Flare fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rudd avoids it really well and circles away.
Rudd scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rudd.
Flare tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Rudd wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Rudd stands up and beckons Flare to his feet.
Rudd misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Flare fails to land the takedown.
Rudd uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Flare.
Flare gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Flare fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Rudd sprawls well initially but Flare persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Flare looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Flare wants to pass the guard but Rudd is defending well.
Rudd is staying active underneath Flare, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Flare not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Flare is trying to work for a kimura but Rudd is defending well.
Flare throwing shots but Rudd is blocking nicely.

Rudd kicks Flare off and gets back to his feet.
Flare changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rudd tries to avoid it but Flare manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rudd to the ground. Rudd escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Chris Rudd has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Flare.
Flare tries to score a power double leg takedown but Rudd sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Flare somewhat.
Flare dodges the punch combination from Rudd.

Rudd closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Flare tries to bench press Rudd off him but Rudd keeps the position.

Rudd decides to stand back up.
Rudd tries to close the distance and clinch up but Flare swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Flare is defended easily by Rudd.
Rudd misses with a few strikes there.
Flare shoots in for a takedown but Rudd shows good takedown defense.
Rudd fails with an attempt to clinch.
Flare has his takedown stuffed

and Rudd decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Flare's guard.

Rudd stands up from Flare's guard - Rudd perhaps looking for a knockout.
Flare misses with a wild combination.

Flare shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Flare working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Flare misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Rudd lands a nice hook to Flare's body. Flare takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Flare is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Rudd defends it well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Flare in particular looking to stall.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Flare wants to take a breather but Rudd is having none of it.

Rudd looks like he's trying to stand up.

Rick Flare showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Flare is looking for a sweep. Rudd is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
It looks like Rudd is going to stand back up.
The fighters are battling for position here. Flare manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Flare lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rudd!
Rudd can't escape the position.
Rudd is trying to stand.
Rudd takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Flare throwing strikes here but Rudd is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

I would just about give that final round to Rick Flare.
I think Flare has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
