PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Evan Waters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Flavius Aetius (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Waters comes to the cage accompanied by No More Mr. Nice Guy. On his way into the cage it seems that Evan Waters has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Evan Waters seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Flavius Aetius!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Waters throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Waters scores with a jab to the jaw.
Aetius drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Waters connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Waters misses the shot to the body.
Waters jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Waters chopping away at his opponent's legs.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Waters connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Waters lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Waters throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Waters takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Waters checks a low kick from Aetius.
Aetius is looking to score with low kicks.
Waters on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Aetius. Aetius obviously looking to wear him down.
Waters lands a nice shot to the body.
Waters slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Aetius checks a leg kick.

Waters checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Waters moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Waters throws a hook to the side of Aetius's head but Aetius sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Waters fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Waters throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
A bone on bone clash there as Waters blocks the leg kick.
Aetius takes one to the chin there.
Waters throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Aetius misses with a body kick.
Evan Waters seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Waters on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Aetius. Aetius obviously looking to wear him down.
A looping hook to the body misses from Waters. Aetius does a little dance to reset his feet.
Evan Waters is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Waters moves out of range of the leg kick from Aetius.
Waters connects with a high kick.

Aetius shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Waters napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Waters tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Waters pushes Aetius away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Aetius gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Waters is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Waters wants to control but Aetius postures up.
Waters is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Aetius tries for a kimura but Waters is defending well.
Waters defending against the ground and pound.

Aetius lands a decent elbow from side control.

Aetius is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Waters has escaped the position, nice work there.
Aetius throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
Aetius trying to control the action but Waters is working from the bottom.

Aetius working the ground and pound.
Aetius moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Waters is trying to get back to half guard.

Aetius tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Aetius has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Waters is trying to control Aetius's posture but Aetius avoids it.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Aetius is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Waters is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Waters tries to improve position but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Evan Waters dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Waters jabs at Aetius's body.
Waters just misses with a punch to the body.
Waters is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Aetius.
Waters throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Aetius tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Waters manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Waters throws a sloppy head kick
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Waters misses with a hook. Aetius ducked under it nicely.
A swing and a miss from Waters.
Waters throws a lazy head kick
and Aetius counters with a leg kick.
Aetius on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Aetius scores with a takedown into Waters's guard.
Aetius won't allow Waters to sweep him here.
Aetius throwing strikes from guard but Waters blocks nicely.

Waters is looking to sweep but instead, Aetius has passed into half guard.
Aetius has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Aetius seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Waters does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Aetius prevents Waters from improving his position.
Aetius is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Waters!
Aetius scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Waters is bucking up trying to escape but Aetius cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Waters keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Aetius throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Waters because Aetius loaded up on that one.

Aetius jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Waters manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Waters takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Waters can't do much from the bottom here.

Aetius is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Waters is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Waters is trying to control Aetius's posture but Aetius avoids it.

Waters is trying to get back to half guard.
Waters is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Aetius is trying to control the action in half guard but Waters is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Waters trying to hold on to Aetius's head to control him but Aetius postures up.

Aetius is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Waters defends it well.
Aetius takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Aetius throwing shots but Waters is blocking nicely.
Aetius is trying to control. Waters wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Waters is trying to stand.
Waters gets back to full guard.
Aetius missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Aetius wants to control from the top but Waters keeps moving.
Aetius tries to free his leg and advance position but Waters is retaining full guard.
Waters wants to stand and escape but Aetius is having none of it.
Waters is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Waters wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Evan Waters wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Aetius fails with a takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Flavius Aetius showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Aetius displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Waters throws out the jab.
Waters tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Aetius shoots in for a takedown but Waters shows good takedown defense.
Waters misses with a jab, cross combination.
Waters blocks a head kick by Aetius.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Aetius bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Waters is looking to regain half guard here but Aetius keeps moving and retains side control.

Waters is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Aetius fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Waters is not content to let Aetius control the position.
Aetius working the head and body with strikes.
Aetius scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Waters to see if he's OK.
Aetius wants to control but Waters is keeping him busy.
Waters pushes Aetius away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Aetius gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Aetius is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Waters knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ground and pound from Aetius seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Waters is trying to buck Aetius off.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Aetius wants to lay and pray for a moment but Waters keeps working.
Waters sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Waters wants to improve his position but Aetius is controlling well.
Aetius is keen to just control but Waters is a slippery customer.

Flavius Aetius comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Aetius has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
