PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Eaton Cox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Larry Burns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cox comes to the cage accompanied by Hatebreed - Destroy Everything. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Eaton Cox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Larry Burns!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Wesley Smith and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Good shot there by Burns.
Cox takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Cox has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Burns delivers a nice body kick.
Burns uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Burns connects with a nice looking jab.
Burns throws out a loose jab but Cox uses good head movement to avoid it.
Cox thows a left - swing and a miss!
Horrible takedown by Cox or perhaps it was just good defense by Burns which made him look bad.
Cox avoids the body shot from Burns.
Burns misses with a body shot
and Cox counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Cox moves out of range as Burns strikes.
Cox misses with a jab to the body
and Burns counters with a nice low kick that buckles Cox's knee momentarily.
Burns swings and misses with a hook to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cox uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Burns has time to react.
Burns throws a right and a left that both miss.
Cox throws a poor cross that misses
and Burns counters with a body kick.
Cox connects with a right hand. Burns shakes it off.
Larry Burns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cox avoids the body shot from Burns.
Burns swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Cox wants to land a leg kick but Burns is out of range.
Cox avoids the body shot from Burns.

Cox drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Cox wants to lay and pray for a moment but Burns keeps working.

Cox is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Burns has escaped the position, nice work there.

Cox tries to advance to mount but Burns denies him.
Burns is trying to control Cox's posture but Cox avoids it.
Burns manages to work his way to half guard, despite Cox's best efforts.
Burns moves into full guard.

Cox drops back, looking for a kneebar! Burns looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Burns looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Burns!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Burns is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Cox's shoulder. That is not cool.
Cox tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Burns wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Cox regains half guard.
Cox wants to control but Burns is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Cox tries to get to full guard but Burns has control of the leg.
Burns is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Burns passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Cox!
Cox is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Cox is squirming around, avoiding Burns's attempts to control the action.
Cox is trying desperately to improve position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Larry Burns dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Burns throws a lazy right hand but Cox sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Cox avoids the body shot from Burns.
Burns throws a hook but Cox avoids it easily.
Burns misses with a body shot.
Cox throws a quick inside leg kick.
Burns misses with a shot to the body

and Cox counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Burns keeping full guard, as Cox tries to pass.

Cox drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cox jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Burns controls Cox momentarily but Cox frees himself.

Cox drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cox jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Cox slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Cox goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Burns has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Cox but great work by Burns.
Cox might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Burns wants to control but Cox is keeping him busy.
Cox tries to improve position but can't.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cox manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Cox wants to control but Burns is keeping him busy.
Cox stalling.
Burns is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Cox scores with a couple of nice shots.
Cox tries to pass to full mount but Burns defends it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Cox is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Cox looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Cox is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Burns has managed to free his arm - good work.

Cox is working for a submission of some sort.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cox is looking to take a break and control but Burns is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Eaton Cox dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Cox lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Burns lands a front kick.
Burns misses with a body shot.
Burns moves out of range as Cox strikes.
Burns tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Cox drives through with a takedown into guard.
Cox looking to sit in guard and control but Burns gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Burns must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Cox keeping full guard, as Burns tries to pass.
Burns passes Cox's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Burns is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Cox reverses the position - he's now on top in Burns's guard.
Cox throws a strike but Burns rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Cox tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Cox wants to improve his position but instead Burns has moved into half guard.
Cox wants to get back to full guard but Burns has passed into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Cox is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Cox is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Burns's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Burns's back!

Cox is working hard for the rear naked choke here.

Cox is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Burns knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Burns for a finish.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Burns wants to control his opponent's hands but Cox gets his hands free.
Burns turns into Cox and is now in his guard.
Burns trying to control but Cox is working from the bottom.

Cox is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Cox can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Burns controls the pace.
Cox trying to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Cox working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Burns doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Burns manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Cox looking for a sweep. Not yet Cox, not yet.
Cox bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Burns's guard.
Burns has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Burns manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cox manages to get himself to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Eaton Cox showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Cox has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
