PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Lars Ruud (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zz Top (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Lars Ruud!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Zz Top!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Paul Aken and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruud tries to clinch up.
Ruud has his takedown stuffed

and Top counters with a beautiful punch that sends Ruud to the canvas!


It looks like Lars Ruud has been cut.
Top controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Top trying to control the position from guard on top but Ruud is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Top not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Top wants to control from the top but Ruud keeps moving.

Zz Top has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Ruud closes the distance but Top moves to the side
and Top counters with a nice uppercut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Top misses with a takedown

and Ruud counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Top controlling the position.
Top trying to keep a closed guard but Ruud is proving a slippery customer.
Top is controlling Ruud's posture.
Top is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Top looking for a guillotine here but Ruud defends easily.
Ruud trying to stand up but can't free himself from Top's guard.
Top wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Ruud is now in half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ruud throwing shots but Top is blocking nicely.
Ruud is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Ruud looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Top tries to get to full guard but Ruud has control of the leg.
Top desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Ruud tries to stand but can't do so whilst Top controls his leg.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ruud looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Ruud not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Top manages to get to full guard.
Top controls Ruud momentarily but Ruud frees himself.
Top lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Ruud!
Ruud tries to lock up and control but Top gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Top has hold of Ruud's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Ruud manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Top moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Ruud has worked his arm free - good work by Ruud!

Top is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Ruud has escaped the position, nice work there.
Top remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Top thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zz Top dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Lars Ruud's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Ruud throws a head kick that misses.
Ruud tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Top misses with a takedown attempt

and Ruud counters with a nice double leg into side control. Top won't be happy with that.
Top is trying to control Ruud's posture but Ruud avoids it.
Top seems a little lost for a moment, as Ruud dominates the positioning.
Top keeping his opponent close.
Top manages to get back to half guard.

Ruud is looking to advance position but Top won't allow it.

Top looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Top has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Ruud is working away from the top position though.
Top is trying to stand.
Top is looking to control Ruud's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Top avoid being mounted?
Top is holding on to half guard well.
Ruud is looking to take a break and control but Top is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Ruud gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Top.

Ruud wants to clinch but Top slips to the side

and Top counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Top wants to free his trapped foot but Ruud is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Top is nestled in close to Ruud, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Top is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Top is trying to control the action in half guard but Ruud is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Top is working for a submission of some sort.
Ruud is pressing down on Top's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Ruud wants to sweep but no luck.
Ruud keeping moving, preventing Top from controlling successfully.
Top loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Top sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Ruud looking for a sweep. Not yet Ruud, not yet.
Top engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Zz Top was stalling too much, according to the referee.

and Ruud counters with a takedown into side control.

A bit of a lull in the action here.

Ruud tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A close second round but Zz Top will probably get the nod - 10:9.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Top is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ruud is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Top tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Top goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Ruud has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Top but great work by Ruud.
The strikes coming from Ruud are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Top is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Ruud misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Zz Top has got the better of the ground game so far.
Top can't do much from the bottom here.
Top tries to strike but it doesn't land.
Top is trying to control Ruud's posture but Ruud avoids it.
What's Top going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Ruud trying to control the action but Top is working from the bottom.
Ruud wants to stand but Top is controlling his arm.
Top wants to control but Ruud postures up.
Top sneaks back into half guard.
Top is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Zz Top hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Top misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Ruud with a lazy takedown attempt

and Top counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Top content to stall in guard here.
Top looking to sit in guard and control but Ruud gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Ruud postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ruud wants to control from the top but Top keeps moving.
Top doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Top pulls Ruud in close to his closed guard and prevents Ruud from doing any damage or advancing position.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Top is trying to control the position but Ruud postures up.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Zz Top hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

and Top counters with a shoot takedown. Ruud fights it but they end up in guard.
Zz Top is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Zz Top comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Top has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
