PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mason Brewer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tuco Mendoza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mason Brewer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tuco Mendoza!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mendoza shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Brewer napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mendoza passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Brewer!
Mendoza punishing his opponent with strikes.
Mendoza can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Brewer is looking to escape.
Brewer trying desperately to get to his feet.
Mendoza scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Brewer?
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendoza is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Brewer lands a head kick!
Brewer throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Mendoza counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Brewer is looking to control Mendoza's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Brewer avoid being mounted?
Brewer is refusing to be controlled, as Mendoza sits in half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendoza thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Mendoza looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Brewer with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Mendoza seems to be looking for submissions.

Mendoza is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
It looks like Mendoza is going to stand back up.
Mendoza tries to pass the half guard into mount. Brewer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Mendoza is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mendoza is taking a breather. Brewer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Mendoza wants to pass the guard but Brewer is defending well.
Brewer is staying active underneath Mendoza, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Mendoza tries to pass the half guard into mount. Brewer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Brewer is trying to maintain the position but Mendoza is very close to passing his half guard.

Mendoza is looking for a kimura but Brewer is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mendoza to get the leverage.

Brewer works his way to full guard. Good work.
Mendoza trying to stand up but can't free himself from Brewer's guard.
Mendoza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brewer swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Mendoza thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Brewer controls Mendoza momentarily but Mendoza frees himself.
Brewer is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mendoza is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Mendoza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brewer swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mendoza slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Mason Brewer just wasn't active enough.
Brewer tries to land a body kick

so Mendoza counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mendoza wants to control from the top but Brewer keeps moving.
Mendoza is stalling in the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tuco Mendoza dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Mendoza closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Mendoza wants to control but Brewer is keeping him busy.

Brewer makes his way to full guard, as Mendoza worked for a kimura.
Brewer is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Mendoza pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Brewer is keeping the position for now.
Mendoza throws a big right hand that misses.
Brewer is trying to control the position but Mendoza postures up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Brewer is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mendoza defends well.
Mendoza trying to control but Brewer is working from the bottom.
Mendoza controls from within his opponent's guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Mendoza is sitting in close to Brewer's body. Brewer has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Mendoza is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Mendoza is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Brewer.
