PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Brus Li (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paulo Figari (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Li comes to the cage accompanied by Knockin' on heaven's door. Paulo Figari struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 136.4lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Paulo Figari has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Brus Li!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Paulo Figari!
The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Aafke Stam and Albert Achterberg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Figari decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Figari in particular looking to stall.
Let's hope that Figari has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Li wants to control but Figari is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's one minute gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Paulo Figari was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Li misses with a body kick.

Li clinches.

Li creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Li jumps guard but Figari stands there with Li around his waist. Li gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Figari tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Li smiles and moves away.

Figari is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Li has managed to free his arm - good work.

Li tries to roll over but Figari keeps him under control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Li has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Figari is working away from the top position though.
Li makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Li.
Figari wants to stand and escape but instead Li has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Li forces his way into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paulo Figari dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Li shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Figari as he avoids it easily.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brus Li. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Figari wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Li has him pressed against the cage.

Figari breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Figari tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Li paws at him with a jab and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Figari with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Li to score with a decent uppercut.

Figari has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Li off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Brus Li seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Figari is breathing heavily.

and Figari counters with a body kick.
Li wants to clinch but Figari slips to the side
and Figari counters with a two punch combo.

Li is looking for a sweep. Figari is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Figari decides to return to a standing position.

and Figari counters with a single leg into guard. Li didn't expect that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paulo Figari showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Figari tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Li paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Figari avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Li shoots in looking for a takedown but Figari manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Li's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Li passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Figari tries to buck Li off but Li is having none of it.
Li is staying tight to Figari's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Figari is not content to let Li control the position.

Li wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Figari, who protects the arm well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Li decides to stand back up.
A chopping leg kick lands by Li.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Li lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Figari has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Figari and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Li moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
A punch lands to the side of Figari 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Figari swats away the attempt to clinch by Li.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Li lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Li closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Figari quickly recovers to half guard.

Li wants to take a breather but Figari is having none of it.

Li stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Li lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Li shoots for a takedown but Figari saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Li fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Figari has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Li looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Figari regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Li.
Li thows a big elbow that misses.
Brus Li has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Li drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Li jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Brus Li showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Figari has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
