PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Chris Baker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kawakami Takeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Baker comes into the arena with Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Chris Baker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kawakami Takeda!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Hirohito Nitta and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Baker fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Takeda sprawls well initially but Baker persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Baker looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Baker is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Takeda wants to get back to full guard.
Takeda moves into full guard.
Baker connects with a couple of short punches.
Baker passes Takeda's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Takeda keeping control of the position.
Ground and pound from Baker.
Baker keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Takeda is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Baker scores with a couple of nice shots.
Takeda is looking for a sweep. Baker is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Baker passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Takeda!

Takeda is desperately trying to improve his position but Baker has a good base and remains in mount.
Baker has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Takeda is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Takeda is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Baker has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Baker seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Takeda for as long as he can get away with.

Baker postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Takeda looks a forlorn figure.

Takeda takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Baker fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Baker sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

The referee warns Takeda that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Takeda is working to get back to half guard.
Baker lands a big shot there that rocks Takeda but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Baker looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A bone on bone clash there as Baker blocks the leg kick.
Baker jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Baker scores with a one two! Takeda had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Baker avoids the head kick by Takeda.
Takeda uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Baker.

Baker shoots in and bounces Takeda off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Takeda is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Baker tries to free his leg and advance position but Takeda is retaining full guard.
Baker not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Takeda looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Baker controlling from the top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Chris Baker.

Takeda gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Baker to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Baker is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Takeda looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Baker puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Baker tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Takeda is in a horrible position here. Baker smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Baker has hold of Takeda's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Takeda manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Takeda manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Takeda is looking for a sweep. Baker is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Takeda is holding on to half guard well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Chris Baker.
Baker blocks the body kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Takeda throws a front kick aimed at Baker's knee but Baker avoids it well.
Takeda attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Baker looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Kawakami Takeda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Takeda tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Baker paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Baker shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Takeda pinned against the cage. Takeda gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Baker shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Takeda as he avoids it easily.
Takeda stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Baker. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Baker counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Takeda!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Takeda is wriggling around trying to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Baker's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Takeda throws a sloppy head kick and Baker moves out of range easily.

Baker gets the takedown into side control.
Takeda is trying to control Baker's posture but Baker avoids it.
Baker cracks Takeda with a big right hand but Takeda just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Chris Baker overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Baker throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Takeda works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Takeda is looking for a sweep. Baker is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Takeda really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Baker. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Baker avoids the attempt from Takeda to control.
Takeda bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Takeda takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Baker is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Takeda defends well.

Baker escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Takeda gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Takeda pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Baker is keeping the position for now.
Baker keeping moving, preventing Takeda from controlling successfully.
Takeda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Baker swivels though and keeps the full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Baker holds on and takes a little breather.
Takeda won't allow Baker to sweep him here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Takeda trying to control but Baker is working from the bottom.
Chris Baker is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Kawakami Takeda hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Baker scores with a shot to the body.
Baker looks for a takedown but Takeda sprawls well.

and Baker counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Takeda!

Well Baker has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
