PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Oliver Cornell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nathan Ames (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ames comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Break down the walls kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Nathan Ames will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Oliver Cornell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nathan Ames!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Joseph Jones and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cornell shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cornell showed some decent athleticism there.
Ames tries to roll over but Cornell keeps him under control.
Ames tries to kick Cornell off but Cornell keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Ames manages to get to full guard.

Ames is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Cornell has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Cornell looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Cornell throws a big right hand that misses.

Ames escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cornell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cornell accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Cornell throws and elbow that misses. Ames uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Cornell's guard. Nice move by Ames!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ames slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Cornell on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Cornell tries to get out of the position.
Cornell tries to hold on but Ames postures up.
Cornell wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Ames.
Cornell might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Cornell holds on to Ames around his waist, trying desperately to prevent any attacks.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Cornell can't escape the position.
Ames wants to control the pace but Cornell is squirming around nicely.
Ames misses with a head shot.
Cornell keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ames throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Ames trying to control but Cornell is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Oliver Cornell will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Cornell changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ames looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Ames parries the strikes from Cornell easily there. Cornell is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Ames to escape.

Cornell is looking to take a break and control but Ames is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Cornell is really struggling to control Ames but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Ames is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cornell pulls his head out easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Ames makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Ames.
Cornell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ames on the ground.

Cornell tries to free his leg and advance position but Ames is retaining full guard.

Oliver Cornell dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Oliver Cornell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Ames has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Cornell should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Ames has tightened it up now! Cornell should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
