PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Happy Gunj (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Haral Dir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Gunj might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Shipping up to boston . These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Happy Gunj!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Haral Dir!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Bruno Hogan and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gunj displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Dir.
Haral Dir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Dir swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Gunj with a lazy takedown attempt
and Dir counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Dir pivots, looking for a leg kick but Gunj is out of range and Dir settles back down.
Dir takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Dir fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Gunj is out of range.
Dir walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Gunj checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Dir changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gunj looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Gunj pushes Dir away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Dir gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Dir trying to control the action but Gunj is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunj tries to buck Dir off but Dir is having none of it.
Gunj is trying to control Dir's posture but Dir avoids it.
Gunj tries to improve position but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Dir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gunj keeps working.
Gunj is trying to control Dir's posture but Dir avoids it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dir in side control, just content to control the action for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Dir looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Gunj misses with a takedown attempt
and Dir counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Gunj scores with a sloppy right hand. Dir should have avoided that one.

Gunj gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Dir to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Dir not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Haral Dir dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Gunj walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Dir avoids a punch combination nicely.
Gunj looks to land a combination. Dir sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.


It looks like Haral Dir has been cut.
Dir is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gunj sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Dir throws a wild body kick that Gunj sees coming a mile off.
Gunj tests Dir's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Dir throws a sloppy head kick and Gunj moves out of range easily.
Dir fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gunj fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Dir gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Gunj counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Happy Gunj has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Haral Dir.
Dir throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Gunj scores with a three punch combo!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Dir.

Gunj closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Gunj tries to advance to mount but can't.
Gunj postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gunj wants to control but Dir is keeping him busy.
Dir is looking for a sweep.
Gunj throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Dir stops Gunj from passing to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dir is not content to let Gunj control the position.
A lull in the action here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gunj tries to move into full mount but can't pass Dir's legs.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gunj is working hard here to advance position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Dir can do anything to dispel that myth.
Dir can't do much from the bottom here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Happy Gunj dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Haral Dir's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Gunj shoots in for a double leg but Dir sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Gunj throws a good cross that connects.
Gunj scores with a hook.
Gunj stalks Dir and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Dir's face. Dir staggers backwards, shaken.
Dir tries for a takedown but Gunj circles away easily
and Gunj makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Dir throws a head kick that misses
and Gunj counters with a right hand to the body.
Gunj stuffs the takedown.
Dir moves out of range of the body kick.
Gunj misses with a double jab.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunj looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Dir shoots in but Gunj avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Happy Gunj has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Haral Dir.
Gunj lands with a straight right. Dir didn't see that one coming.
Gunj blocks a low kick nicely.
Dir has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Dir on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Dir lands a jab to the nose.
Gunj lands a jab-cross combination.
Dir with a lazy takedown attempt
and Gunj connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Gunj lands with a nice combination. Dir backs away looking to recover.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Dir misses with a takedown attempt
and Gunj counters with a left and a right that stings Dir.


Dir is rocked!
Dir takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Dir throws a head kick but Gunj moves out of range.
Happy Gunj is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Dir tries for a takedown but Gunj circles away easily

and Gunj counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Gunj tries to free his leg and advance position but Dir is retaining full guard.
Gunj working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Gunj postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gunj passes Dir's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Gunj passes to full mount!
Gunj sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Gunj trying to control but he's not successful this time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gunj controlling his opponent.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Dir is squirming around, avoiding Gunj's attempts to control the action.

And that's the end of the fight!
Happy Gunj showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Gunj has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
