PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Zion Wainui (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Flare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wainui comes to the cage accompanied by "Rockafella Skank" Fatboy Slim. Flare comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Also Sprach Zarathustra kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The key to victory for Zion Wainui has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Zion Wainui!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Flare!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Flare misses with a series of wild punches.

Flare looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Wainui!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Flare throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Wainui is looking to get to half guard.
Wainui tries to hold on but Flare pushes him away.
Flare working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Wainui wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Flare.

Flare wants to finish this one by submission but Wainui is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Flare.

Flare goes for an armbar but Wainui turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Wainui.

Flare looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Wainui has picked Flare up and slammed him! Flare can't keep hold of the triangle and Wainui manages to pass to side control!
Flare is looking for a sweep.
Flare wants to control but Wainui postures up.
Flare is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Wainui decides to stand up, so the ref orders Flare to his feet.

Flare shoots in and bounces Wainui off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Flare trying to control the position from guard on top but Wainui is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Flare is looking to work some ground and pound but Wainui has wrist control.
Flare with a flurry of punches that miss.

Flare throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Wainui works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Flare throws a strike but Wainui rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Wainui got a little sloppy there for a moment and Flare has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Wainui has managed to get both his arms back between Flare's legs - danger averted.

Flare is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Wainui tries to stand but Flare is controlling from the bottom.
Flare has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Flare has his foot on Wainui's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Wainui works his way back into a safe position though.

Flare shoots in and drives through. Wainui sprawls well.
Wainui fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Flare looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Sloppy strikes from Wainui. Those never looked like landing.

Flare closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Wainui quickly recovers to half guard.

Flare is working for a submission of some sort.
Wainui is looking for a sweep. Flare is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Wainui is staying active underneath Flare, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Wainui is looking to improve his position.
Flare thows a huge punch but Wainui dodges it nicely.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Flare thows a big elbow that misses.
Flare postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Wainui keeping moving, preventing Flare from controlling successfully.

Flare drops back looking for a leg! Wainui is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Wainui manages to kick Flare off! Flare jumps back into Wainui's guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Flare's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Flare accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Flare trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Wainui preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Flare throwing strikes but missing.
Flare wants to control from the top but Wainui keeps moving.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Flare postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Rick Flare showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Flare dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Flare is trying hard to land a takedown here. Wainui sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Wainui lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Flare circles away quickly and effectively.
Wainui bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Wainui swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Wainui throws a hook but Flare avoids it easily.
Flare fails with a takedown attempt.
Wainui dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wainui thuds a left hand into Flare's body.
Flare shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Wainui as he jumps to the side.
Zion Wainui has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Flare.

Flare cracks Wainui with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Wainui punishes Flare's body with a nice straight punch.
Flare on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Flare throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Wainui sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Wainui feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Flares jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Wainui is looking to wear down Flare with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Wainui misses with a wild combination.
Wainui lands with a good body shot.

and Flare decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wainui's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Flare with a nice head shot there.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Zion Wainui has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Flare throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Wainui works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Rick Flare is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Flare is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Flare controlling the pace for now.

Poor strikes thrown by Flare there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Let's hope that Flare has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Wainui swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

Rick Flare comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Flare winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
