PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Douglas Schmidli (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sevak Magakian (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Magakian has chosen Sevak Magakian Highlights as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Douglas Schmidli!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sevak Magakian!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmidli tries to clinch there but Magakian circles away.

Magakian clinches with his opponent.
Magakian is trying to stall.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Schmidli.

Magakian pulls Schmidli into guard.
Magakian looking to hit a scissor sweep but Schmidli is one step ahead there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Magakian trying to keep a closed guard but Schmidli is proving a slippery customer.

Magakian has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Schmidli is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Magakian.

Magakian tries to bench press Schmidli off him but Schmidli keeps the position.
Schmidli knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Magakian on the ground.
Magakian can't do much from the bottom here.
Magakian tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Schmidli wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Magakian is trying to get back to full guard.

Magakian is trying to control but Schmidli passes into side control!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Magakian tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Magakian gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
It looks like Schmidli is going to stand back up.
Magakian pushes Schmidli off looking to stand but Schmidli dives back in and keeps control.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Sevak Magakian will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Magakian tries to bum rush Schmidli with a series of wild strikes but Schmidli uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Magakian throws a half hearted mid kick.
Schmidli tries to clinch but Magakian moves away

and Magakian counters with a shoot takedown. Schmidli fights it but they end up in guard.
Magakian has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Schmidli is proving hard to escape from.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Magakian looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Magakian decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sevak Magakian is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Magakian counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Schmidli!

Magakian goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Schmidli is on top in guard.
Schmidli wants to stand and escape but instead Magakian has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Sevak Magakian has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Douglas Schmidli seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sevak Magakian showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!



Magakian closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Magakian wants to get back to striking at distance but Schmidli won't allow it.

Magakian jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Schmidli walks away with a smile on his face. Magakian gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Douglas Schmidli has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sevak Magakian.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Magakian tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Schmidli just stands there and leans against the cage.

Magakian ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Magakian no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Sevak Magakian wasn't active enough on the ground.
Schmidli wants to clinch but Magakian slips to the side
and Magakian counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Schmidli tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Magakian counters with a nice double leg into side control. Schmidli won't be happy with that.

Magakian tries to advance to mount but can't.
Magakian cracks Schmidli with a big right hand but Schmidli just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Schmidli is not content to let Magakian control the position.

Magakian stands up.

And that's the end of the fight!
Sevak Magakian comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Magakian winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
