Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mathew Bell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matheus Dutra! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Donatello Bradman and Bruno Hogan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Dutra is trying hard to land a takedown here. Bell sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Bell throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Dutra tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Bell is in Dutra's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bell trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Dutra manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Dutra looking to pass the guard. Bell pulls Dutra in close to prevent any damage. Dutra stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bell swivels though and keeps the full guard. Dutra throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Bell works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Dutra wants to pass the guard but Bell is keeping the position. Bell is controlling Dutra's posture.
That's one minute gone in the round. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Dutra drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Dutra jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Dutra is looking to work some ground and pound but Bell has wrist control. Dutra postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Bell is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Dutra, into his guard. Dutra looking to hit a scissor sweep but Bell is one step ahead there. Bell controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Bell got a little sloppy there for a moment and Dutra has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Bell has managed to get both his arms back between Dutra's legs - danger averted. Bell avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Bell has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Bell loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Bell postures up in Dutra's guard and throws a big left but Dutra blocks it. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Dutra working a defensive guard here.
Bell is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Dutra is trying to control the position but Bell postures up. Bell stays in close to Dutra's body and controls the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Mathew Bell just wasn't active enough. Dutra with a poor takedown and Bell counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bell tries to stand but his arm is trapped. Dutra is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Bell pulls his head out easily. Dutra is trying to maintain the position but Bell is very close to passing his half guard. Dutra tries to roll over but Bell keeps him under control. Dutra actively working from the bottom here. Bell wants to stand up but Dutra has a hold of him and won't allow it. Bell is breathing heavily. Bell throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Dutra regains full guard. Nicely done. Dutra tries to land a sweep but no joy. Bell trying to control the position from guard on top but Dutra is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Bell wants to stand but Dutra is controlling his posture from full guard. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Dutra is on top in guard.
Dutra advances to half guard. Dutra thows a huge punch but Bell dodges it nicely.
Bell tries to get to full guard but Dutra has control of the leg. Bell is not content to let Dutra control the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mathew Bell dominated that round. That's time! Bell's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Dutra misses with a takedown attempt and Bell counters with a takedown into side control. Bell working away. Dutra on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Dutra is looking to reverse the position. Dutra is trying to control Bell's posture but Bell avoids it. Dutra is looking for a sweep. Bell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Dutra on the ground. Bell working away. Dutra is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Bell trying to control the action but Dutra is working from the bottom. Dutra can't do much from the bottom here. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dutra gets back to half guard. Dutra gets full guard. Dutra is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Dutra is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Bell is aware though and is defending well. Bell is sitting in close to Dutra's body. Dutra has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Bell is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Bell is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Dutra.
