PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Lee Staton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Adam Renz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Renz has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Adam Renz is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Staton pushes Renz up against the cage in a clinch.

Staton wants the takedown. Renz is fighting it off but Staton persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Renz's guard against the cage.
Renz keeping moving, preventing Staton from controlling successfully.

Renz wants to get back to his feet but Staton is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Renz wants to sweep but no luck.

Staton has closed the distance and engaged Renz in a clinch.

Staton has clasped his hands together around Renz's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Renz tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Staton wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Staton decides to stand up, so the ref orders Renz to his feet.

Staton wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Renz, who protects the arm well.

Renz is not content to let Staton control the position.

Staton has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Renz fails to land with a series of punches.
Staton fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Renz.

Renz tries to sprawl but Staton drives through with a takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Staton content to control rather than advance.
Staton wants to take a breather but Renz is having none of it.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Staton thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Staton is taking a breather. Renz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Lee Staton.

Staton clinches with his opponent.
Renz is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Staton gets control of Renz's arms and successfully pulls guard. Staton will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Renz won't allow Staton to sweep him here.
Staton manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Staton lands a nice shot to the head.

Staton stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Renz throws a leg kick that is checked

and Staton counters by clinching up.

Renz is looking to work some ground and pound but Staton has wrist control.
Staton is pulling down on Renz's head to control his posture.
Renz slips nicely into half guard.
Renz prevents Staton from improving his position.
Staton wants to control but Renz is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Staton knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Renz on the ground.
Staton is concentrating on defense, preventing Renz from advancing position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Renz wants to pass the guard but Staton is defending well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Renz decides to stand and escape the position.

Staton bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Renz enables Staton to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Renz manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Renz wants to improve his position but Staton is controlling well.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Lee Staton wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Staton darts in and clinches Renz up against the cage.
A right handed body shot lands from Staton.

Staton is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Renz can't fight it off and eventually Staton manages to take the fight to the floor. Renz looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Renz is striking but Staton is not phased and passes to half guard.
Staton is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Renz can do to turn this around?
Staton looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Renz with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Renz tries to get to full guard but Staton has control of the leg.

Staton is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Renz sees it coming and defends easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Staton stands up and beckons Renz to join him on the feet.
Staton ducks under a wild hook from Renz.

Staton closes the distance and pushes Renz back into the cage.
Staton is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Staton blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Staton stands up and waves to Renz to follow him.
Staton thumps Renz with a low kick.
Staton plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Staton closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Staton lands in his opponent's guard.

Staton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Renz swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Staton gets to his feet. Renz looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Staton feints and as Renz raises his hands in defense, Staton changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Staton drops back looking for a leg! Renz is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Renz manages to kick Staton off! Staton jumps back into Renz's guard.
Staton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Renz swivels though and keeps the full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Staton won't allow Renz to sweep him here.

Staton gets to his feet. Renz looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Staton wants to stand but Renz has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Renz is looking for a sweep. Staton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Renz takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Staton bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Renz's guard.
Lee Staton overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Renz throws and elbow that misses. Staton uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Renz's guard. Nice move by Staton!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
