PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gregores Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joseph T O Callahan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendez comes into the arena with Paleface- Helsinki-Shangri-La blaring out of the sound system. O Callahan has chosen More human than human - White Zombie as his entrance music. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gregores Mendez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joseph T O Callahan!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Wesley Smith and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
O Callahan defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mendez.
O Callahan slips under a jab.

Mendez closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Mendez looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendez has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Mendez is working for a guillotine from mount but O Callahan frees his head quite easily.

Mendez swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and O Callahan is now in Mendez's guard. A big mistake from Mendez there, giving up the dominant position!
Mendez tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Mendez lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for O Callahan!

Mendez is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but O Callahan is surviving well by controlling Mendez's body position as best he can.

O Callahan prevents any damage by holding on tight.

Mendez working for a submission but O Callahan is keeping him at bay.

Mendez trying to control but he's not successful this time.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

O Callahan is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Mendez goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now O Callahan is on top in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendez looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Mendez trying to keep a closed guard but O Callahan is proving a slippery customer.
Mendez is really struggling to control O Callahan but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Mendez swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
O Callahan lands a head kick. Mendez smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Mendez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around O Callahan's waist but O Callahan gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mendez off to one side.
O Callahan throws a head kick but Mendez moves out of range.
Mendez misses with a few strikes there.
Mendez moves out of range of the body kick.
Mendez takes a swing at O Callahan's ribcage but misses.
O Callahan tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Mendez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
O Callahan takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Mendez has a takedown stuffed.
Gregores Mendez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
O Callahan throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
O Callahan tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Mendez misses with a hook. O Callahan ducked under it nicely.
O Callahan tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Mendez closes this distance looking for a takedown but O Callahan circles away.

Mendez throws a combination but it was largely blocked by O Callahan.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mendez shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says O Callahan as he avoids it easily.

Mendez misses with a takedown attempt - O Callahan sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

O Callahan slaps away a takedown attempt from Mendez, before circling back to the center of the mat.
O Callahan throws a sloppy head kick and Mendez moves out of range easily.

Nice takedown defense from O Callahan. No joy for Mendez on that attempt.
O Callahan tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Mendez shoots in for a double leg but O Callahan sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Mendez throws a combination but it was largely blocked by O Callahan.
Mendez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Mendez closes this distance looking for a takedown but O Callahan circles away.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

O Callahan pushes Mendez up against the cage in a clinch.

Mendez shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as O Callahan sprawls well. O Callahan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mendez gets slowly back to his feet.

O Callahan throws a sloppy head kick and Mendez moves out of range easily.

Joseph T O Callahan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Mendez throws a shot from downtown. O Callahan moves away and avoids it.

Mendez lands a nice hook to O Callahan's body. O Callahan takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Mendez swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by O Callahan.
Danga de danga de dang - Mendez scores with a four punch combination!
Mendez dives in and grabs O Callahan's left leg, looking for a takedown. O Callahan pushes down on Mendez's head and hops out.
O Callahan moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

O Callahan stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and O Callahan wants it to stay on the feet.
O Callahan throws a head kick but Mendez moves out of range.

It looks like Gregores Mendez has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mendez tries to reverse the position but O Callahan maintains control.
O Callahan tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Mendez is in all sorts of trouble here.

O Callahan takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
O Callahan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mendez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Joseph T O Callahan wasn't active enough on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Mendez throws a series of strikes that have O Callahan backpedaling.
O Callahan throws a head kick that misses.
A head kick from O Callahan lands but Mendez takes it in his stride.

Mendez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Mendez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Poor strikes thrown by Mendez there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mendez throws some wild stikes that O Callahan manages to avoid easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Joseph T O Callahan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think O Callahan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
