PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Aaron DeBay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafael Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Aaron DeBay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rafael Silva!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silva tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but DeBay paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Silva shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Silva showed some decent athleticism there.
Silva seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but DeBay does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
DeBay avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Silva.
Silva tries to pass the half guard into mount. DeBay knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Silva is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Silva misses with a head shot. DeBay uses the momentum to regain guard.
Silva throwing strikes but missing.
Silva postures up in DeBay's guard and throws a big left but DeBay blocks it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

DeBay fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Silva, pushing him back against the cage.

DeBay prevents a takedown attempt there.

Silva has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed DeBay clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
DeBay wants to escape the position.
Silva is throwing shots to the body but DeBay manages to wriggle free. Silva pounces on him again and ends up in DeBay's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

DeBay is trying to control the position but Silva postures up.

Silva is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Silva has gone for a leg lock! DeBay slips out almost immediately though and dives into Silva's guard.

Silva working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. DeBay doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. DeBay manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Silva wants to sweep here but DeBay controlling him for the moment.
Silva has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

DeBay decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Silva, up you get!

DeBay is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Silva's half guard.

DeBay wanted to stand there but Silva had control of the position.
DeBay is stalling in the full guard.
Silva controls DeBay momentarily but DeBay frees himself.

Silva is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Silva lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for DeBay!
Silva can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as DeBay is looking to escape.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
DeBay slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Silva seems to be looking for submissions.
Silva thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed DeBay's head.

Silva is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
DeBay is doing well to control the position and prevent Silva from advancing to side control.

A close round but Rafael Silva will probably get the nod.

Silva closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Silva lands in his opponent's guard.

Silva drops back, looking for a kneebar! DeBay looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. DeBay looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from DeBay!

DeBay decides to take the fight back to the feet.
DeBay looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Silva throws a series of strikes that have DeBay backpedaling.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Aaron DeBay overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

DeBay tries to circle away but Silva has him pinned against the cage.

DeBay is fighting off a takedown attempt but Silva is just too persistent for him and manages to trip DeBay to the mat. DeBay regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

That was a close second round but I would say that Aaron DeBay will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Silva wants to clinch up but DeBay keeps it at a distance.

Silva will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Silva.
Aaron DeBay has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rafael Silva.
DeBay lands a glancing blow to the side of Silva's head.
Silva connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed DeBay momentarily.

DeBay shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Silva manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

DeBay has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

DeBay got a little sloppy there for a moment and Silva has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, DeBay has managed to get both his arms back between Silva's legs - danger averted.

I would just about give that final round to Rafael Silva.
