PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lewis McLay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Semmy Bonjasky (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McLay comes to the cage accompanied by "The Party Song" by Blink 182. Semmy Bonjasky will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lewis McLay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Semmy Bonjasky!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A chopping leg kick lands by Bonjasky.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
McLay misses with a takedown attempt - Bonjasky sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
McLay fails with the takedown.
A solid leg kick lands there for Bonjasky.
McLay on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
McLay really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
McLay closes the distance and clinches up with Bonjasky, looking for a takedown. McLay pushes Bonjasky against the cage but Bonjasky circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lewis McLay. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bonjasky lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.

McLay decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Bonjasky is trying to maintain the position but McLay is very close to passing his half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McLay seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bonjasky does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Bonjasky is trying to get back to full guard.
McLay is trying to control. Bonjasky wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

McLay wants to pass to mount but Bonjasky is defending the position.
McLay is working hard here to advance position.

McLay throwing shots but Bonjasky is blocking nicely.

Bonjasky is defending against the submission attempts here by McLay.
McLay looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
McLay thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
McLay wants to pass the guard but Bonjasky is defending well.

Bonjasky is concentrating on defense, preventing McLay from advancing position.
McLay stalling.
McLay wants to control but Bonjasky is keeping him busy.
Bonjasky wants to control but McLay is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Good leg kick by Bonjasky there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
A nice leg kick lands there from Bonjasky.

McLay fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Bonjasky, pushing him back against the cage.
McLay tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Bonjasky avoids it.

McLay wants the takedown. Bonjasky is fighting it off but McLay persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Bonjasky's guard against the cage.

Bonjasky looking to control.
McLay trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
McLay passes Bonjasky's left leg - he's now in half guard.
McLay content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
McLay is pressing down on Bonjasky's thigh, looking to free his foot. Bonjasky is holding on for now.
McLay passes the guard and advances to mount!
Bonjasky is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Lewis McLay will probably get the nod.

Bonjasky attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
McLay shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Bonjasky pinned against the cage. Bonjasky gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
McLay looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bonjasky is fending him off so far but McLay persists. Nope, Bonjasky circles away and we're back to standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McLay wants to clinch up but Bonjasky keeps it at a distance.

A nice leg kick lands there from Bonjasky.
McLay tries for a takedown but Bonjasky sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Bonjasky fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and McLay has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
No luck with that takedown attempt from McLay.

Semmy Bonjasky is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
McLay fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Bonjasky throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Bonjasky throws a low kick, looking for McLay's leg but McLay calmly moves out of range.
McLay shoots in but no luck this time.
McLay shoots for a double leg takedown but Bonjasky sprawls well. He's pushed McLay's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Bonjasky motions for McLay to come forward. Bonjasky throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
McLay blocks a head kick by Bonjasky.
Bonjasky throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bonjasky turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
McLay is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Bonjasky buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
McLay fails with the takedown.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Bonjasky.
McLay shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Bonjasky defends it nicely.

McLay misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Bonjasky throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by McLay.
McLay misses with the body kick
and Bonjasky counters with a low kick, right behind McLay 's knee.
Bonjasky swings away with a leg kick that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Semmy Bonjasky showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Bonjasky moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McLay blocks a low kick nicely.
Bonjasky pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Bonjasky throws the kick towards the body but McLay avoids it.

McLay moves out of range as Bonjasky throws a body kick.
McLay shoots for a double leg takedown but Bonjasky sprawls well. He's pushed McLay's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Bonjasky lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Bonjasky throws a wild body kick that McLay sees coming a mile off.
McLay looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lewis McLay. That's going to take a lot out of him.
McLay shoots in looking for a takedown but Bonjasky manages to keep the fight standing, pushing McLay's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Bonjasky lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and McLay has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from McLay and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
McLay shoots in looking for a takedown. Bonjasky tries to sprawl out of it but McLay keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Bonjasky manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A head kick misses from Bonjasky.
McLay with a lazy takedown attempt
and Bonjasky counters with a nice body kick.
McLay tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Bonjasky swivels and escapes.

McLay fails with the takedown
and Bonjasky counters with an outside leg kick.
McLay tries to clinch up but Bonjasky circles away and keeps his distance.
Bonjasky thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on McLay if he has to take too many more of those.
McLay checks a low kick from Bonjasky.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bonjasky slaps away a takedown attempt from McLay, before circling back to the center of the mat.
McLay tries to clinch up but Bonjasky circles away and keeps his distance.

And that's the end of the fight!
Semmy Bonjasky comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Bonjasky has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
