PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Popinksi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Popinksi comes into the arena with My Life blaring out of the sound system. Gracie has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Gabriel Popinksi had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gabriel Popinksi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Royce Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, John Roberts and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Popinksi moves into the clinch successfully.
Gracie stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Gracie has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Popinksi is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Popinksi manages to break the clinch.
Popinksi tries to clinch but Gracie is having none of it.

Popinksi shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gracie's guard.
Gracie looks gassed!
Gracie has a closed guard, preventing Popinksi from standing up.
Popinksi is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Popinksi gets to his feet - Gracie follows without any prompting.
Popinksi looks for the body kick but Gracie saw that one coming.

Popinksi feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Royce Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Royce Gracie's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

and Popinksi counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Gracie!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Gracie wants to hold on but Popinksi pushes him away.
Gracie sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Popinksi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gracie keeps working.

Popinksi passes to side control.
Popinksi remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gracie is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Popinksi's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Popinksi's back!
Gracie looking to hold on to the position here but Popinksi rolls and ends up regaining guard.
Popinksi wants to stand and escape but Gracie is having none of it.

Well Popinksi has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
