PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mateus Santiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricardo Morientes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Morientes has chosen Rap Das Armas as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ricardo Morientes!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Valeri Chadov and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santiago stuffs the takedown.

Santiago's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Santiago wants to break free but Morientes has control.
Morientes manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Morientes goes for a takedown attempt but Santiago pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Santiago digs a right hand underneath Morientes's ribcage. Morientes let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Santiago is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Santiago is pressed up against the cage. Morientes has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Santiago down to the mat. Santiago avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Santiago tries to close the distance and clinch up but Morientes swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Morientes drops down looking for an ankle pick but Santiago pulls his leg out and moves away.

and Morientes counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Santiago's guard now.

Morientes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Morientes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Morientes avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Santiago knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Morientes on the ground.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Santiago lands a right hook to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mateus Santiago dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Morientes avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Morientes has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Morientes there as he acknowledges the shot.
Morientes tries to score a power double leg takedown but Santiago sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Morientes somewhat.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Morientes is defended easily by Santiago.

Santiago is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Morientes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Morientes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Morientes drops back, looking for a kneebar! Santiago looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Santiago looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Santiago!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
