Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jose Toro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Phillip (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Toro comes into the arena with Te Dejo Madrid blaring out of the sound system. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Alyssa Summers and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Toro tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Phillip paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Phillip ducks under a wild hook from Toro.
A combination from Toro does no damage.
Toro pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Toro misses with an uppercut.
Phillip lands with a kick to the ribs.
Phillip throws a quick inside leg kick.
Phillip misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Toro.
A solid leg kick lands there for Phillip.
Phillip turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Phillip cracks a nice hook into Toro's ribs.
Toro jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.


It looks like Michael Phillip has been cut.

Toro bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Phillip's head backwards.
Phillip throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Jose Toro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Toro tries to close the distance and clinch up but Phillip swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Phillip feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Toro's calf.
Toro takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
A looping hook to the body misses from Toro. Phillip does a little dance to reset his feet.
Phillip ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Phillip sizes up Toro with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Phillip uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Toro.

Toro doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Phillip lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Crunch! Phillip slams his shin into Toro's torso.

Phillip tests Toro's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Phillip is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Toro had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.

Toro shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Phillip as he jumps to the side.

and Phillip counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Toro is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Toro closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Toro is breathing heavily.
Phillip wants to control but Toro is keeping busy.
Phillip is trying to get back to full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Phillip is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Toro jumps into side control!

Toro has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Toro is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Phillip is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Phillip tries to bench press Toro off him but Toro keeps the position.
Phillip is trying to control Toro's posture but Toro avoids it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Phillip is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Toro thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Toro tries for a kimura but Phillip is defending well.

Jose Toro is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Toro gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.

Toro walks forward, straight into a front kick from Phillip.
Nice takedown defense from Phillip. No joy for Toro on that attempt.
Phillip takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Phillip lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Toro takes a shot to the body in his stride.

I think Phillip has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
