Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Cowen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jose Aldo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Josh Cowen!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Joseph Jones and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aldo tries to clinch there but Cowen circles away.
Cowen needs to keep his hands up - Aldo had a free shot at his head there.

Aldo tries to keep at a distance but Cowen has taken the fight into the clinch.

Cowen manages to break the clinch.
Aldo misses with a few strikes there.
Jose Aldo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Aldo throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.

Cowen takes the fight into the clinch.
Aldo wants to get back to striking at distance but Cowen won't allow it.

Cowen is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Aldo can't fight it off and eventually Cowen manages to take the fight to the floor. Aldo looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Cowen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Aldo has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cowen has managed to get both his arms back between Aldo's legs - danger averted.

Cowen gets to his feet. Aldo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

and Cowen moves into the clinch.

Cowen has hold of one of Aldo's legs. Aldo is fighting the takedown attempt but Cowen gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Cowen wants to stand but Aldo is controlling his posture from full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Aldo is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cowen defends well.

Aldo has his foot on Cowen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cowen works his way back into a safe position though.

Cowen connects with a right hand. Aldo shakes it off.

Cowen seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Cowen wants to pass to mount but Aldo is defending the position.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Cowen has closed the distance and engaged Aldo in a clinch.

The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Cowen ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cowen no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cowen is on top in guard.
Cowen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Aldo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Cowen slips a nice elbow through Aldo's hands, connecting with Aldo's forehead.
Aldo wants to improve his position but Cowen is controlling well.

Cowen is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Aldo is trying to get back to full guard.

Cowen wants to work for an arm triangle but Aldo is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Cowen tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Aldo swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Cowen avoids the attempt from Aldo to control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cowen lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Cowen jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Aldo manages to avoid the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Josh Cowen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Aldo's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Aldo comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Cowen closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Cowen is working for a kimura but Aldo is defending it quite comfortably.
Aldo is trying to stand up here but Cowen is controlling him well.

Aldo has an active guard here but Cowen has managed to pass into half guard.

Cowen is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Cowen is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Aldo doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Cowen.

Aldo wants to control but Cowen postures up.

Aldo has one of Cowen's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.

You can see the frustration on Aldo's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Well, if Cowen is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Let's hope that Cowen has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Well Cowen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
