PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chingis Chan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chan has chosen You Can't Bring Me Down by Suicidal Tendencies as his entrance music. Chingis Chan has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, BJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of London, Chingis Chan!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, James Glass and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Penn looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Penn seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Chan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Penn wants to pass to mount but Chan is defending the position.

Penn is working for a submission of some sort.
Chan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Penn passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Chan!

Penn jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Chan manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Penn tries for a kimura but Chan is defending well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn working away.
Chan is not content to let Penn control the position.
Penn is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Chan is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Chan tries to bench press Penn off him but Penn keeps the position.

Penn tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Chan is trying to improve his position.

Chan sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Penn is looking for a kimura here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn tries to pass the half guard into mount. Chan knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Penn looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Chan is trying to control but can't.
Chan is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Penn is staying active.
Chan is looking to escape.
Penn trying to control the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

BJ Penn dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Chan moves in looking to clinch but Penn pushes him off.
The fight stays on the outside here - Chan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Chan stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Chan wants it to stay on the feet.
Penn looks to land a body kick but Chan moved away.
Penn misses with a head kick.
Penn looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Chan throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.
Chan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Penn swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Penn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Chan has Penn up against the cage in a clinch.
Chan throws a knee to the head but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Penn tries to pull guard but Chan holds him up against the cage and eventually Penn drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for BJ Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chan tries a body shot but Penn blocks it.
Chan tries to work over Penn's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Chan gets through Penn's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

Chan has a couple of punches blocked by Penn.
Chan tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Chan tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Penn is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Chan pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Penn gets control of Chan's arms and successfully pulls guard. Penn will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Penn looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Chan looking to sit in guard and control but Penn gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Chan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Chan striking off his back but it's not causing Penn any problems.

Chan is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Penn defends well.

Penn controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Penn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Chan is keeping the position for now.
Penn is working hard here to advance position.
Penn trying to control but Chan is working from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Penn shoots in but Chan avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Penn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Penn is trying hard to land a takedown here. Chan sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Chan fails in his attempt to clinch.

Chan takes the fight into the clinch.
Chan lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Chan tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Chan working aggressively here.
Chan misses with a punch on the inside.

Chan prevents Penn from breaking the clinch.
Chan tries to throw a body punch but Penn avoids it by throwing Chan back against the cage.
Penn misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Chan.
Chan misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Chan swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Chan misses with a punch on the inside.
Penn blocking some punches.
Penn prevents a body shot from Chan.
Chan misses with some punches.
Chan misses with a short punch on the inside.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Chan misses with a hook to the ribs.
Chan doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Chan misses with a knee to the head.
Penn wants a takedown but no success here.
Penn prevents a body shot from Chan.
Chan struggles to land a body shot inside as Penn controls his hands.
Chan misses with a punch on the inside.
Chan swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Penn fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Penn has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Chan is trying to keep an underhook but Penn manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Chan defends it well.
Chan is looking to control Penn's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Chan avoid being mounted?
Penn is looking to stall here but Chan recovers full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that BJ Penn will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Penn misses with a body kick.
Chan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Penn swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Penn decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Penn moves into full mount! Chan won't be happy about that!

Penn is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Chan can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Penn goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Chan turns into him and now he's in Penn's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Penn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Chan is posturing up here but Penn has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Chan tries to roll out but it's too tight and Chan has to tap! Slick submission there by Penn!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:30 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). BJ Penn!
