Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mauricio Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Munch!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Seu Braga and Mauricio Rocha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Munch pushes Rua up against the cage in a clinch.
Rua gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
It looks like John Munch has been cut.
Rua lands a knee to the body.
Munch avoiding damage as Rua throws knees to the body.
Rua looking to throw knees to the head but Munch is blocking nicely.
Rua misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Munch.
Rua lands an elbow just above Munch 's eye.
Munch takes a knee right on the jaw!

Munch fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Munch blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Rua tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Rua tries to land knees in the clinch but Munch avoids the damage to the body.

Rua has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Munch is proving hard to escape from.
Munch is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Rua is aware though and is defending well.

Rua wants to stand and escape but instead Munch has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Munch gets to his feet. Rua looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Munch changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Rua looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Rua is trying to work for a sweep but Munch has mounted him!
Rua tries to reverse the position but Munch maintains control.
Munch has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Munch has hold of Rua's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Rua manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Rua wants to try and get back to his feet.
Munch swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Rua is now in Munch's guard. A big mistake from Munch there, giving up the dominant position!
Munch is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Rua gets to his feet - Munch follows without any prompting.
Rua looks to clinch
and Munch counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Rua tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Rua working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Munch doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Munch manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Munch slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Rua is pulling down on Munch's head. It's preventing any offense from Munch, at least for the moment.
Rua looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Munch puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Munch is working for a submission of some sort.
Rua makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Rua.
Rua tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Rua is trying to keep Munch in close.
Rua has his foot on Munch's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Munch works his way back into a safe position though.
Rua is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Munch dives into side control.

Rua is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Munch wants to control but Rua is keeping him busy.

Munch takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Rua is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Rua wants to control but Munch is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Rua wants to clinch
and Munch counters with a left and a right that stings Rua.

and Munch counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Rua!
Munch with a couple of short strikes.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Munch can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rua is looking to escape.
Rua is bucking up trying to escape but Munch cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Munch is working for a guillotine from mount but Rua frees his head quite easily.

Munch shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Munch was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Munch tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Munch can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rua is looking to escape.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

John Munch showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Munch connects with a nice short shot to Rua's temple.

Munch is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Rua defends it well.
