PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Stan Winner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricardo Reis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reis is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Survivor - Eye of the Tiger. Ricardo Reis struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 171.8lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Ricardo Reis told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Stan Winner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ricardo Reis!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Ivan Kurochkin and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Winner tries for a takedown but Reis manages to get underhooks.
Winner lands a nice elbow.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Winner's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Reis throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Left hook, right uppercut from Reis.
Some wild striking there from Reis.
Reis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Winner scores with a leg kick.

Winner closes the distance and clinches.

Reis breaks the clinch.

Winner darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Winner lands strikes from half guard.

Winner missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Winner trying to pass the guard but Reis defending well.
Winner not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Winner is looking to stall here but Reis recovers full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Reis is trying to stand back up but Winner is controlling him

Winner seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Reis does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Winner wants to pass the guard but Reis is defending well.
Winner throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Winner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Winner tries to pass to full mount but Reis defends it.
Winner sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Reis defending well though.
Winner not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Winner is looking to advance position but Reis won't allow it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Winner lands with a good body shot.
Reis misses with a two punch combination.
Winner stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Winner blocks a head kick by Reis.
Ricardo Reis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Winner throws a leg kick which misses Reis's front leg but catches the back leg as Reis tries to avoid it.
Reis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Reis throws a predictable looking body shot
and Winner makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Reis throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Winner counters with a nice uppercut.

Winner shoots in and bounces Reis off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Winner distracts Reis with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Reis is breathing heavily.

Reis keeping moving, preventing Winner from controlling successfully.
Winner slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Winner wants to control from the top but Reis keeps moving.
Winner looking to sit in guard and control but Reis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Winner is pulling down on Reis's head to control his posture.
Reis won't allow Winner to sweep him here.

Stan Winner has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
A solid body kick from Reis.
Reis takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Reis motions for Winner to come forward. Reis throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Reis fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Reis feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Winner's calf.
Ricardo Reis is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Reis gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Winner makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

letting Winner counter with a right hand.
Ricardo Reis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Winner stuns Reis with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Winner looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Reis!
Reis is in a horrible position here. Winner smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Winner cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stan Winner dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Reis misses with a head kick.
Winner misses with a head kick.
Winner shoots in for a takedown but Reis shows good takedown defense.
Winner shoots in looking for a takedown. Reis tries to sprawl out of it but Winner keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Reis manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Reis takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Reis throws a head kick that misses
and Winner counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Reis throws a leg kick
and Winner counters with a good low kick that Reis was not able to check.

Reis connects with a nice looking jab.
Winner fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Winner.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Stan Winner. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Winner counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Winner works on Reis's body with a couple of short punches.
Winner lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Reis.

Nice body punch from Winner - that landed with a thud.
Winner digs a right hand underneath Reis's ribcage. Reis let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Winner presses Reis against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
A left hand lands to the body for Winner.
Winner changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Reis fights it off and pushes away nicely.
A nice leg kick lands there from Winner.
Reis on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.

Winner is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Winner lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.

Winner closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Reis quickly recovers to half guard.
Winner is nestled in close to Reis, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Winner slows the pace down in half guard.

Winner is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Stan Winner is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ricardo Reis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Stan Winner.
