PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Andrey Varrava (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sergey Bomber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrey Varrava!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sergey Bomber!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Sergei Dronov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bomber chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Varrava can pounce on him.
Varrava looks for a takedown but Bomber sprawls well.

Varrava closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Varrava passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Bomber!
Bomber is in all sorts of trouble here.
Bomber wants to hold on but Varrava pushes him away.
Varrava controlling the pace for now.
Varrava has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bomber is trying to stand up.
Varrava controlling from mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Bomber is bucking up trying to escape but Varrava cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Varrava trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Bomber is working to get back to half guard.
Varrava postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Bomber looks a forlorn figure.
Bomber tries to control Varrava's body but Varrava pushes him off. Bomber squirms to his side and now Varrava has his back!
Varrava landing with strikes.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bomber grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.
Varrava lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Varrava slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Bomber prevents Varrava from getting a body triangle.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Varrava not allowing Bomber to control his hands.

Bomber is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Bomber is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Bomber looks gassed!
I would not like to be Bomber right now.
Bomber is trying to break free.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andrey Varrava dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Bomber tries to close the distance and clinch up but Varrava swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Bomber fails with the takedown

and Varrava decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Bomber's guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Andrey Varrava.
Varrava lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.


It looks like Sergey Bomber has been cut.
Bomber circles away from the clinch attempt.
Bomber tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Varrava lands with a straight right. Bomber didn't see that one coming.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Varrava bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Varrava trying to control the action but Bomber is working from the bottom.
Varrava is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Bomber is breathing heavily.

Bomber struggling a bit here.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Varrava works to advance to full mount. Bomber defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Varrava with a couple of short strikes.
Varrava controlling the pace for now.
Andrey Varrava overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Varrava in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Varrava lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Varrava is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Varrava extends the arm and Bomber is forced to tap!
