PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tom McGettigan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edmond Dantes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McGettigan's entrance music is Knifeman - The Bronx. A fine choice. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tom McGettigan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Edmond Dantes!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGettigan tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Dantes paws at him with a jab and circles away.
McGettigan throws out a loose jab but Dantes uses good head movement to avoid it.

McGettigan has taken the fight to the clinch.

Dantes escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Dantes fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Dantes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. McGettigan tries to avoid it but Dantes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag McGettigan to the ground. McGettigan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Tom McGettigan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Dantes tries to close the distance and clinch but McGettigan swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

McGettigan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Dantes on the ground.

McGettigan has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

McGettigan gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
McGettigan lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Dantes circles away quickly and effectively.
Dantes gets cracked with a nice right hand there by McGettigan.
Dantes wants to clinch
and Dantes takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
McGettigan misses with a low kick.
McGettigan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Dantes counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Dantes.
Dantes keeps the fight in the clinch, despite McGettigan's efforts to push away.

Dantes breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Dantes stuffs the takedown.
Dantes takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Dantes throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
McGettigan throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Dantes counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in McGettigan's guard now.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McGettigan avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
McGettigan wants to sweep but no luck.
Dantes trying to control but McGettigan is working from the bottom.
Dantes looks gassed!

McGettigan manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Dantes manages to get himself to full guard.
McGettigan content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
McGettigan throws a big right hand that misses.
Dantes is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
McGettigan wants to get back to his feet.

McGettigan is concentrating on defense, preventing Dantes from advancing position.
McGettigan is trying to stand up here but Dantes is controlling him well.
Dantes is trying to control the action in half guard but McGettigan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
McGettigan is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Dantes jumps into side control!
McGettigan parries the strikes from Dantes easily there. Dantes is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable McGettigan to escape.
McGettigan is trying to buck Dantes off.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
McGettigan works the jab nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Dantes shoots in looking for a takedown. McGettigan tries to sprawl out of it but Dantes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. McGettigan manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
McGettigan fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Donk. McGettigan catches Dantes right on the button with a cross.
McGettigan misses with a wild combination.
Tom McGettigan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
No joy there for Dantes, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
McGettigan misses with the combination.
McGettigan bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Good exchange - McGettigan coming out on top.
McGettigan lands a nice looking body shot.

and Dantes counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Dantes.

McGettigan has control of Dantes's left arm, preventing Dantes from doing any damage.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
McGettigan is trying to control the position but Dantes postures up.
McGettigan on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if McGettigan tries to get out of the position.
McGettigan pulls Dantes in close to his closed guard and prevents Dantes from doing any damage or advancing position.
Dantes has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of McGettigan is proving hard to escape from.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
McGettigan throws a left and a right that both miss

and Dantes counters by clinching up.
Dantes is looking for a takedown up against the cage. McGettigan gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

McGettigan has picked Dantes up - he's going for a ride! McGettigan dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
McGettigan working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

McGettigan wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Dantes has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

McGettigan lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Dantes circles away quickly and effectively.
McGettigan catches Dantes with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
McGettigan shoots in looking for a takedown. Dantes tries to sprawl out of it but McGettigan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Dantes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Dantes is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but McGettigan is keeping busy.

Dantes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Dantes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
McGettigan goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
McGettigan throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Dantes on the side of the head.

and McGettigan holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

McGettigan throws a combination. Dantes tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
McGettigan throws a right hand that Dantes ducks under and follows up with a left that Dantes also avoids with ease.
Dantes misses with a takedown attempt - McGettigan sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McGettigan wants to stand but Dantes is controlling the position.
Edmond Dantes has got the better of the ground game so far.

Dantes drops back, looking for a kneebar! McGettigan looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. McGettigan looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from McGettigan!

You can see the frustration on Dantes's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Dantes tries to buck McGettigan off but McGettigan is having none of it.

McGettigan looks up at the clock and then as Dantes takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, McGettigan smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

McGettigan stands up and we're back to a striking position.

McGettigan throws a nice looking combination but Dantes bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

McGettigan wants to stand but Dantes is controlling the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Edmond Dantes.
I think McGettigan has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
