The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Philips avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Philips swats away the attempt to clinch by Alves.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Alves is struggling to control the position.
Philips misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Alves tries to circle away but Philips has him pinned against the cage.
Alves connects with a nasty looking knee right to Philips's face.

Alves lands a good knee to the midsection. Philips won't want to take too many of those.

Alves pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Alves throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Alves throws a head kick but Philips moves out of range.
Alves fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Philips is out of range.

Alves darts in and clinches Philips up against the cage.
Alves tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Alves content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Alves has had enough of the clinch but Philips keeps him there for the moment.
Philips jumps guard but Alves stands there with Philips around his waist. Philips gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Philips shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Philips was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Philips throws some wild stikes that Alves manages to avoid easily.
Poor strikes thrown by Philips there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
A nice elbow there by Philips.
Philips with the ground and pound from mount.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Philips won't let Alves get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Philips cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Philips lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Alves looks gassed!
Alves is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Philips looking to control but Alves is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Philips is working for a guillotine from mount but Alves frees his head quite easily.

Philips has control of Alves's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Alves regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Philips tries to control but Alves wriggling away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Philips throws the left hand but Alves avoids the punch easily.
Philips misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Alves tries to keep at a distance but Philips has taken the fight into the clinch.

and Alves counters with a good low kick that Philips was not able to check.

Alves throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Alves throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Philips tries to clinch but Alves is having none of it.

Alves has taken the fight to the clinch.
Philips is working for takedown but Alves is calmly controlling the position for now.

Alves breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Alves is breathing heavily.
Philips takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Alves closes the distance and clinches.
Philips is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Alves is keeping busy.
Philips has had enough of the clinch but Alves keeps him there for the moment.
Alves has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Philips just misses with a elbow thrown towards Alves's brow.

Philips shoots in looking for a takedown. Alves tries to sprawl out of it but Philips keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alves manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

and Philips counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Philips stands and steps away. Alves gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Nice takedown defense from Alves. No joy for Philips on that attempt.

Philips fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Alves sprawls well initially but Philips persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Alves pushes Philips off looking to stand but Philips dives back in and keeps control.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Philips connects with a nice short shot to Alves's temple.

Philips wants to control but Alves is keeping him busy.
Philips working over Alves with some ground and pound. Alves looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Alves looks like he's trying to stand up.
Philips working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
