PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between mervin john (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Caps (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gary Caps told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gary Caps!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Caps fails to land the takedown.
john displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Caps.
Caps shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
mervin john has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gary Caps.
Caps tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but john swivels and escapes.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Caps.
Caps shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Caps looks gassed!

john has Caps up against the cage in a clinch.

john gets a trip takedown into half guard.
john is looking to take a break and control but Caps is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Caps taking some punishment here, with john in his half guard.
john is thwarting Caps's attempts to control the position.
john missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

john trying to control from half guard but Caps is working away.
john controlling the action here.
Caps trying to hold on to john's head to control him but john postures up.
Caps is refusing to be controlled, as john sits in half guard.
Caps has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. john is working away from the top position though.

john seems to be working for a kimura but Caps defends the submission attempt.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

john has Caps up against the cage in a clinch.

john manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
john has Caps pulled in close to control his posture.

Caps is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Caps stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. john swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
john is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

john is looking for a triangle here but Caps uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
john sneaks back into half guard.
john knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Caps on the ground.

john is defending against the submission attempts here by Caps.
john wants to control the action here but instead Caps manages to pass to full mount!
Caps looking to finish with strikes here!

Caps working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
john avoids a series of strikes thrown by Caps.
Caps putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
john is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
john is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Caps working for a submission but john is keeping him at bay.

Caps goes for an armbar but he's not got it… john turns into him and now he's in Caps's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

mervin john dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Caps crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from john - the referee stops the clock and Caps gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says john. Caps manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

john closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Caps tries to get to full guard but john has control of the leg.
john is just content to waste time from the top position. Caps takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
john trying to control the position from guard on top but Caps is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Caps is looking for a triangle but john pushes his legs off easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Caps has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think john should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Caps has tightened it up now! john should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
