PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mark Giles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom McGettigan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McGettigan has chosen Knifeman - The Bronx as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Skip Squint and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGettigan rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Giles moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
A solid body kick from Giles.
Giles fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
McGettigan throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Giles.
McGettigan keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Nice takedown defense from McGettigan. No joy for Giles on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Giles. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Giles tries to score a power double leg takedown but McGettigan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Giles somewhat.
McGettigan throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

McGettigan stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and McGettigan wants it to stay on the feet.
McGettigan tries to clinch up but Giles circles away and keeps his distance.

Giles shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. McGettigan defends it nicely.

McGettigan wants to control from the top but Giles keeps moving.

McGettigan wants to get up but he can't break Giles's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
McGettigan wants to stand and escape but instead Giles has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Giles makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if McGettigan can do anything to dispel that myth.
McGettigan pulls Giles in close to his closed guard and prevents Giles from doing any damage or advancing position.
McGettigan is looking to stand up but Giles isn't so interested in that idea.

Giles is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because McGettigan is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Giles tries to free his leg and advance position but McGettigan is retaining full guard.

McGettigan is adopting a defensive guard.
Giles throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McGettigan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Giles trying to control but McGettigan is working from the bottom.
Giles passes McGettigan's left leg - he's now in half guard.
McGettigan is not content to let Giles control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Giles moves in looking to clinch but McGettigan pushes him off.
McGettigan throws a right hand that Giles ducks under and follows up with a left that Giles also avoids with ease.
A combination from McGettigan does no damage.

McGettigan scores with a jab to the body.
McGettigan tries to bum rush Giles with a series of wild strikes but Giles uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Giles moves into range and clinches up with McGettigan.
McGettigan wants to break free but Giles has control.
McGettigan is trying to break the clinch but Giles has him pressed against the cage.
McGettigan can't break the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Giles drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

McGettigan tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Giles just stands there and leans against the cage.
Giles using the Thai plumb to throw knees but McGettigan has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Giles is pressed up against the cage. McGettigan has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Giles down to the mat. Giles avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

The fight stays on the outside here - McGettigan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
McGettigan misses with a low kick as Giles jumps back.

McGettigan changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Giles looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Oh Giles is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Giles is looking to reverse the position.
Giles seems to have got his legs back now.
Giles is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

McGettigan decides to take the fight back to the feet.
McGettigan misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Giles. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.

Giles shoots for a double leg takedown but McGettigan sprawls well. He's pushed Giles's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
McGettigan looks to land a combination. Giles sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
McGettigan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Giles swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Giles closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. McGettigan did well to prevent Giles getting side control.

Giles thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McGettigan's head.
Giles wants to lay and pray for a moment but McGettigan keeps working.

McGettigan is refusing to be controlled, as Giles sits in half guard.
McGettigan preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Giles content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

McGettigan shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Giles napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Giles wants to control but McGettigan postures up.
McGettigan misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Giles is trying to control McGettigan's posture but McGettigan avoids it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom McGettigan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mark Giles has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Tom McGettigan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well McGettigan has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
