PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gabilondo Soler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jaakko Kolmonen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kolmonen comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Patakakkonen kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gabilondo Soler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jaakko Kolmonen!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Dmitry Maklakov and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kolmonen lands with a hook. Soler tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Kolmonen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Soler.
Soler slips under a jab.
Kolmonen avoids the body shot from Soler.
Kolmonen lands a nice looking body shot.
Soler tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kolmonen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Soler somewhat.
Soler misses with a wild body shot.
Kolmonen connects with a body shot.
Soler steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Kolmonen.
Soler throws a big shot that misses.
Kolmonen looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Soler throws a shot to the body.
Kolmonen throws a predictable looking body shot

and Soler counters with a takedown into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kolmonen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Soler wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Soler is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kolmonen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kolmonen prevents Soler from moving into mount.
Kolmonen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Soler. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kolmonen can't do much from the bottom here.

Soler working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Soler is trying to get an arm triangle but Kolmonen is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kolmonen tries to buck Soler off but Soler is having none of it.

Soler wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Kolmonen, who protects the arm well.

Soler is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kolmonen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Soler tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Soler goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Kolmonen has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Soler but great work by Kolmonen.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Soler stops Kolmonen from passing to mount.
Kolmonen trying to control the position but Soler is working away.
Kolmonen controls the position.
Kolmonen is looking to take a break and control but Soler is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Soler regains half guard there - taking advantage of Kolmonen's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Soler misses with a takedown attempt - Kolmonen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Soler misses with a two punch combination.
Kolmonen scores with a jab. Soler acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Kolmonen misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Soler avoids the head kick by Kolmonen.
Soler thows a body shot but no joy.
Kolmonen throws a hook to the side of Soler's head but Soler sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Soler blocks a jab.
Soler is looking to wear down Kolmonen with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Soler fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kolmonen manages to avoid it.
Soler tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kolmonen was well out of range. Poor timing from Soler.
Soler throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Gabilondo Soler is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Kolmonen lunges at Soler with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Soler's hand.
Kolmonen connects with the punch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Soler is defended easily by Kolmonen.

Soler swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Kolmonen bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Soler's head backwards.
Soler tries for a takedown but Kolmonen sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Soler looks to score with a jab to the body but Kolmonen is just out of range.

Jaakko Kolmonen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kolmonen misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Soler is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

and Soler counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Soler drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kolmonen looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kolmonen looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kolmonen!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kolmonen trying to control the action but Soler is working from the bottom.
Kolmonen happy to just control the position for now.
Kolmonen working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Soler tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kolmonen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Kolmonen wants to control but Soler is keeping him busy.
Soler is looking for a sweep.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
The fighters circling - Kolmonen throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Kolmonen might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Kolmonen lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Kolmonen walks into a straight right hand from Soler.
Soler takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

A jab lands there for Kolmonen.
Kolmonen throws a wild body kick that Soler sees coming a mile off.
Jaakko Kolmonen seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Soler walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Kolmonen takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Soler shoots in but no luck this time.
Kolmonen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Kolmonen fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Soler looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
A left and a right from Kolmonen both land. Nice combination.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kolmonen keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Kolmonen cracks Soler with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Soler moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Kolmonen lands with an uppercut that bounces Soler off the cage and back into rage.

Soler walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Soler throws a sloppy body shot
and Kolmonen makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Soler really felt that one!

Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Kolmonen!
Soler looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Kolmonen throws a left and a right that both miss

and Soler counters with a nice double leg into side control. Kolmonen won't be happy with that.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Soler is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kolmonen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Gabilondo Soler overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
You can see the frustration on Kolmonen's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Kolmonen regains half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Soler is working for a submission of some sort.
Kolmonen is trying to stand.
Kolmonen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Soler is working for an americana but Kolmonen has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Soler was thinking about the submission.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Soler drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Kolmonen dives on top into guard.
Kolmonen has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Soler is proving hard to escape from.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Soler escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kolmonen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Kolmonen wants to control from the top but Soler keeps moving.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jaakko Kolmonen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kolmonen has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
