PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ranta Ringen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vi Vi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vi Vi told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ranta Ringen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Vi Vi!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Marco Blurström and Roosa Järviläinen.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vi throws out a leg kick but Ringen moves out of range and Vi only half commits.
Vi fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Ringen has Vi up against the cage in a clinch.

Ringen breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Vi fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Ringen slaps away a takedown attempt from Vi, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Ranta Ringen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Vi Vi.
No joy there for Ringen, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

and Ringen counters with a takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vi is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Ringen wants to stand up but Vi has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Vi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Vi is looking to stand up but Ringen isn't so interested in that idea.
Ringen with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Ringen looking to sit in guard and control but Vi gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Vi pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ringen is keeping the position for now.

Ringen has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Vi is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Ringen.
Ringen is looking to reverse the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ringen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Vi wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Ringen seems a little lost for a moment, as Vi dominates the positioning.

Vi grinds an elbow into Ringen's temple.
Ringen is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Ringen is breathing heavily.
Vi tries to stand but Ringen is controlling his head.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Ringen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Vi wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Ringen is working to avoid the ground and pound but Vi connects with a decent elbow.
Vi scores with a couple of short elbows.
Vi works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Vi is looking to take a break and control but Ringen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ranta Ringen will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Vi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Ringen sprawls well. Ringen wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Vi gets slowly back to his feet.

Vi is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ringen defends well.
Vi is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Vi is breathing heavily.
Ringen wants to get back to full guard.

Vi maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Ringen could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Vi has cracked it and Ringen is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Vi!
