PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Viikkarin Vasara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pawel Nastula (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nastula comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Armia - Niezwyciężony kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Viikkarin Vasara!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pawel Nastula!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Anni Minnemäki and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vasara bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Vasara could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Nastula is letting Vasara control him for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vasara tries to stand but Nastula is controlling his head.

Vasara looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Vasara tries to advance to mount but Nastula denies him.
Nastula tries to buck Vasara off but Vasara is having none of it.
Nastula keeping his opponent close.
Vasara working away.
Vasara controls the position.
Vasara wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nastula keeps working.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

so Vasara counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Vasara controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Nastula is pulling down on Vasara's head. It's preventing any offense from Vasara, at least for the moment.

Nastula working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vasara doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vasara manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vasara's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Nastula can't keep his opponent in guard - Vasara advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Nastula wants to improve his position but Vasara is controlling well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Nastula has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Vasara is working away from the top position though.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Nastula gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Vasara seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Viikkarin Vasara dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Nastula with a poor takedown

and Vasara counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Vasara trying to control the position from guard on top but Nastula is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vasara pushes down on Nastula's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Nastula looking for submissions off his back.
Nastula is looking to control Vasara's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Nastula avoid being mounted?
Vasara looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Nastula with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Vasara perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Vasara is working for a submission of some sort.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Vasara controlling the pace.
Nastula is trying to maintain the position but Vasara is very close to passing his half guard.
Nastula is not content to let Vasara control the position.
Vasara content to control rather than advance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Nastula is pressing down on Vasara's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Oh but Nastula is tightening it up a little... Vasara has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Vasara reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Vasara taps out! nice BJJ there by Nastula!
