PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joe Fredericks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jesper Rush (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rush has chosen Tom Sawyer - Rush as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Fredericks!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jesper Rush!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, William Peck and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rush looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Rush content to control rather than advance.
Rush's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Fredericks works his way to full guard. Good work.
Rush trying to control the position from guard on top but Fredericks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Fredericks is trying to control the position but Rush postures up.
Rush wants to pass the guard but Fredericks is keeping the position.
Rush pushing down on Fredericks's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Fredericks tries to roll over but Rush keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rush tries to pass to full mount but Fredericks defends it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Fredericks is not content to let Rush control the position.
Fredericks is trying to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Fredericks digs a good body shot into Rush's ribs.
Fredericks misses with a body kick.
Fredericks lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fredericks throws a head kick that misses.

Rush looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Rush throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Rush wants to control from the top but Fredericks keeps moving.
Rush throwing strikes from guard but Fredericks blocks nicely.
Rush is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Fredericks is pulling down on Rush's head. It's preventing any offense from Rush, at least for the moment.
Rush looking to sit in guard and control but Fredericks gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Joe Fredericks will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Fredericks throws a hook but Rush blocks it.
A nice inside leg kick there by Fredericks. That's going to slow Rush down.
Fredericks tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rush paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Joe Fredericks is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rush moves out of range as Fredericks throws a body kick.
Fredericks plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Fredericks tries to clinch up.
Fredericks tries to work over Rush's front leg with a kick but Rush checks it.
Joe Fredericks seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fredericks tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rush swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Rush moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Rush shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fredericks as he jumps to the side.

Rush misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Fredericks.
Fredericks lands a lovely overhand right.
Rush throws a good cross that connects.
A jab from Rush finds it's way through Fredericks's defenses.
Fredericks tries to clinch there but Rush circles away.
Rush throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.

Fredericks pushes Rush up against the cage in a clinch.
Rush lands a good knee to the midsection. Fredericks won't want to take too many of those.

Rush gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fredericks wants to sweep here but Rush controlling him for the moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rush is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Rush passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Rush working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fredericks struggling a bit here.
Rush in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Fredericks is not content to let Rush control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The ground and pound from Rush seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Fredericks regains half guard.
Rush is looking to stall here but Fredericks recovers full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Fredericks has Rush pulled in close to control his posture.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Fredericks dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Rush tries to close the distance and clinch up but Fredericks swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Rush holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Rush tries to pull guard but Fredericks holds him up against the cage and eventually Rush drops back down to his feet.

Fredericks is trying to break the clinch but Rush is controlling him.
Fredericks tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Rush is looking to control Fredericks's arms but Fredericks gets an underhook and turns him. Now Rush has his back to the cage.
Rush working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Fredericks doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Rush is pushing Fredericks up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Rush lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.

Fredericks misses with a short punch on the inside.
Fredericks missing with knees to the body.

Fredericks struggles to land a body shot inside as Rush controls his hands.
Fredericks can't find room to land a body shot as Rush controls the action.
Rush misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Fredericks letting Rush take a breather here.
Fredericks tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
A short right from Fredericks on the inside.
Rush blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Rush on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
A nice right hand lands inside from Rush.
Fredericks misses with a punch to the body.

Rush is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Fredericks can't fight it off and eventually Rush manages to take the fight to the floor. Fredericks looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Rush stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fredericks swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Fredericks not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Rush preventing the sweep.
Rush advances to half guard.
Jesper Rush has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rush works his way into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fredericks dodges the ground and pound from Rush.
Rush is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Fredericks will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Fredericks is trying to get back to half guard.
Rush works to advance to full mount. Fredericks defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
BOOM! Rush connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Fredericks keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Rush goes for an armbar but Fredericks turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Fredericks.

Rush has his foot on Fredericks's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Fredericks works his way back into a safe position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jesper Rush comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Fredericks has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
