PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between John Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddy James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shaw comes to the cage accompanied by Shangri-La. James has chosen We Want The Funk by George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, John Shaw!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Freddy James!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Jorge Garcia and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaw fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Shaw takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
James moves away from the strike by Shaw.
James works over Shaw's head and body with a nice combination.


It looks like John Shaw has been cut.
Shaw fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Shaw with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling James to score with a decent uppercut.
James throws a looping overhand right but Shaw ducks down to avoid it.
Shaw drops his hands momentarily and James takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
James ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Shaw loads up on a big right hand but James slips the punch.
Shaw shoots in for a takedown but James shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Shaw. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Shaw throws a sloppy body shot
enabling James to counter with a crisp jab.
A big right from James misses.
James takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Shaw throws a hook to the side of James's head but James sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
James has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Shaw misses the body punch
and James counters with a lovely shot to the body.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Shaw fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches James on the side of the head.
James missing with a left hand there. Shaw was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Shaw misses the jab.
Shaw misses with a straight left.

Shaw shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. James defends it nicely.
Nice jab there from James.
Shaw looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? James is fending him off so far but Shaw persists. Nope, James circles away and we're back to standing.
Shaw has a takedown stuffed.
Shaw is breathing heavily.
James bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
James sizes up Shaw with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Shaw swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Shaw feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
James wants to get back to his feet but Shaw is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
James looking for a sweep. Not yet James, not yet.
James keeping moving, preventing Shaw from controlling successfully.
Shaw throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as James works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

James manages to escape and get back to his feet.

James moves into range and clinches up with Shaw.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
James comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

James escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

James darts in and clinches Shaw up against the cage.
James lands a body punch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
James tries to circle away but Shaw has him pinned against the cage.
James makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Shaw is really struggling to find his range with his punches. James's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
James blocks a punch to the side of the head.
James stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.

James breaks the clinch.

James has Shaw up against the cage in a clinch.

James's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Shaw cracks James with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Shaw takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Shaw throws a hook but James blocks it.
Nice uppercut lands for James. That snapped Shaw's head back.
James lands a jab.

James drives through and clinches with Shaw against the cage.
Shaw tries to throw a body punch but James avoids it by throwing Shaw back against the cage.
James lands with a right to the head.
A nice left hand lands by James.
A short right from James on the inside.
James lands a hook that snaps the head of Shaw backwards.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Shaw swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Shaw is trying to break free.
Shaw has had enough of the clinch but James keeps him there for the moment.
James works on Shaw's body with a couple of short punches.

James breaks from the clinch.
James slips a jab from Shaw.
Shaw takes a shot to the body in his stride.
James tries to clinch but Shaw moves out of range.
James ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Shaw takes one to the chin there.
James will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
James scores with a jab to the jaw.
James scores with a sloppy right hand. Shaw should have avoided that one.
James jabs Shaw right on the nose. Shaw blinks but takes it well.
Shaw drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
James swings for the body but Shaw moves out of range.

James has taken the fight to the clinch.
A short right from James on the inside.

James pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from James, right into the meat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Shaw takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Shaw shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Shaw takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
James fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
James moves into range and connects with a jab.
James lands a slapping body shot.
James scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Shaw doesn't seem bothered though.
James paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
James lands with a nice combination. Shaw backs away looking to recover.
James connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.


Shaw is rocked!
The fighters circle momentarily. James darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Oh Shaw is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
James lands with a shot to the body.
James cracks Shaw on the jaw with a powerful right hand and Shaw falls backwards against the cage. James follows up with more strikes that drop Shaw to his knees. James keeps the pressure on and the referee jumps in to save Shaw! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:43 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Freddy James!
