Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gerald Egans!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joe Furlong!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Egans drives through with a takedown into guard.
Furlong is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Egans looking to pass the guard.
Egans wants to control from the top but Furlong keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Furlong looking to control.
Egans looking to sit in guard and control but Furlong gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Furlong scoring with some ground and pound.
Furlong throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Egans works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Furlong is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Egans wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Furlong is now in half guard.
Furlong perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Egans on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Furlong not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Egans actively working from the bottom here.
Furlong is nestled in close to Egans, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Furlong lands a nice short elbow.
Egans has a hand on Furlong's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Furlong takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Furlong controlling the pace for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Egans is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Egans is in a horrible position here. Furlong smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Egans takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Furlong jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Egans is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Egans and Furlong has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Egans can't do much from the bottom here.
Egans sneaks back into half guard.

Egans wants to control but Furlong is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Furlong is looking to advance position but Egans won't allow it.
Furlong is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Egans tries to roll over but Furlong keeps him under control.
Furlong not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Egans has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Furlong is working away from the top position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Egans fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jab, jab by Egans - just one landing.
Egans throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Furlong avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Egans tries to clinch but Furlong is having none of it.
Egans tries to close the distance and clinch up but Furlong swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Egans works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Egans lands a jab to the head.
Egans looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Furlong is fending him off so far but Egans persists. Nope, Furlong circles away and we're back to standing.
Egans will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Egans connects with a crisp jab.
Egans goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Egans moves into the clinch successfully.
Furlong throws a head punch that misses.

Furlong decides to pull guard.
Furlong looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Egans puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Egans is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Gerald Egans will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Egans wants to clinch up but Furlong keeps it at a distance.
Furlong misses with a takedown attempt - Egans sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Furlong throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Egans's waist but Egans gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Furlong off to one side.
Furlong is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Egans.
Egans throws a nice head kick!


Furlong is rocked!
Furlong fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gerald Egans has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Furlong.
Egans tries to close the distance and clinch up but Furlong swats him away and circles back towards the center.

so Furlong counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Furlong slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Egans is not content to let Furlong control the position.

Furlong is breathing heavily.

Egans sneaks back into half guard.

Furlong looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Egans wants to get back to full guard.
Egans is looking to control Furlong's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Egans avoid being mounted?
Egans is staying active underneath Furlong, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Furlong is thwarting Egans's attempts to control the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Egans has his takedown stuffed

and Furlong counters with a takedown into side control.
Furlong wants to lay and pray for a moment but Egans keeps working.
Furlong scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Egans to see if he's OK.
Egans is trying to get back to half guard.

Egans wants to get back to his feet.

Egans tries to bench press Furlong off him but Furlong keeps the position.

Furlong is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Egans knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
You can see the frustration on Egans's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Furlong has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Egans sneaks back into half guard.
Furlong working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Furlong prevents Egans from improving his position.
Egans is refusing to be controlled, as Furlong sits in half guard.
Egans is trying to maintain the position but Furlong is very close to passing his half guard.
Furlong throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Egans is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Furlong's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Furlong's back!
Egans is controlling the position but Furlong somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Furlong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Egans misses with a two punch combination.
Furlong tries to score a power double leg takedown but Egans sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Furlong somewhat.

Egans has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Furlong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Egans is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Furlong sitting in guard here, content to control.
Egans is trying to keep Furlong in close.
Furlong prevents Egans from getting back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Egans misses with a jab, cross combination.

Egans shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Furlong looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Egans maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Furlong could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Egans has cracked it and Furlong is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Egans!
