PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Billy Curry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Curry has chosen Billy the Mountain as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Billy Curry was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Royce Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Billy Curry!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Bruno Lombardi and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Curry lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Gracie closes this distance looking for a takedown but Curry circles away.
Royce Gracie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gracie tries to score a power double leg takedown but Curry sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gracie somewhat.
Gracie really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Curry throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Gracie.

Gracie gets a takedown into half guard.
Gracie is keen to just control but Curry is a slippery customer.

Gracie wants to work for an arm triangle but Curry is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Curry won't allow Gracie to pass to mount.
Curry wants to get back to full guard.

Gracie is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Curry defends it well.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Oh Gracie is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Gracie avoids a punch combination nicely.

Curry lands with a straight right. Gracie didn't see that one coming.

Gracie misses with a takedown attempt - Curry sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Gracie throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Curry's waist but Curry gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gracie off to one side.

Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Curry stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Curry wants it to stay on the feet.
Curry fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Gracie sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Curry but Curry pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Curry lands with a thumping leg kick.

Curry stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Curry wants it to stay on the feet.
Gracie blocks a head kick by Curry.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Curry throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Curry lands a head shot.
Gracie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Curry bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Gracie's head backwards.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Curry lands a nice hook to Gracie's body. Gracie takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Gracie bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gracie postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Gracie wants to control but Curry is keeping him busy.
Curry really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Curry is looking for a sweep.
Curry can't do much from the bottom here.
Curry tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gracie wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Gracie is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Curry is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The ground and pound from Gracie seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Gracie shoots in but Curry avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Gracie walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Curry fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Gracie darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Curry wants to improve his position but Gracie is controlling well.
Gracie throws a strike but Curry avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Gracie is working Curry over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Curry wants to sweep here but Gracie controlling him for the moment.
Gracie slips nicely into half guard.
Curry has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gracie is working away from the top position though.
Gracie will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Gracie wants to advance to full mount but Curry doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Curry is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Curry comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Curry has Gracie pushed against the cage.
Gracie fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Gracie tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Curry just stands there and leans against the cage.

The referee calls for Curry to work.

Gracie had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Curry defends it easily.

Gracie escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Curry gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Curry got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gracie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Curry has managed to get both his arms back between Gracie's legs - danger averted.

Gracie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

I would just about give that final round to Billy Curry.
I think Curry has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
