PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James J Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gage Ruehlen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ruehlen comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Can't Be Touched- Roy Jones kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! James J Jones has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James J Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gage Ruehlen!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice uppercut lands for Ruehlen. That snapped Jones's head back.
Ruehlen misses with a series of wild punches.
Jones takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Ruehlen looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Ruehlen looks to land a combination but Jones avoids it well.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt - Ruehlen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Ruehlen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Ruehlen in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Jones has a closed guard, preventing Ruehlen from standing up.

Gage Ruehlen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jones doesn't manage to clinch there - Ruehlen circles away.
Ruehlen scores with a push kick.
Jones fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Ruehlen misses with a leg kick.

Jones feints and as Ruehlen raises his hands in defense, Jones changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Ruehlen looking for a guillotine here but Jones defends easily.
Jones controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Ruehlen working for a triangle but Jones defends it easily.
Jones trying to stand up but can't free himself from Ruehlen's guard.
Ruehlen is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Jones trying to control but Ruehlen is working from the bottom.
Jones thows a big elbow that misses.

Jones stands up from Ruehlen's guard - Jones perhaps looking for a knockout.
Jones moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Ruehlen throws a nice inside leg kick.
Ruehlen dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Jones. That did some damage!
Ruehlen throws a one two combo.
Jones avoids the body shot from Ruehlen.
Ruehlen misses with a combination

and Jones counters with a nice double leg into side control. Ruehlen won't be happy with that.
Ruehlen tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Jones trying to control the action but Ruehlen is working from the bottom.

Jones stands up.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Ruehlen tries to keep at a distance but Jones has taken the fight into the clinch.
Ruehlen is trying to force a seperation but Jones has the dominant position.
Ruehlen gets underhooks to prevent Jones's takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James J Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jones manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Ruehlen gets to his feet. Jones looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Ruehlen smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Jones fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that James J Jones will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


A head kick misses from Jones.
Ruehlen showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Jones.
Jones shoots for a takedown but Ruehlen saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
The crowd cheers as Ruehlen lands an impressive looking overhand right. Jones doesn't seem phased though.

Ruehlen wants to control but Jones passes easily into half guard.
Ruehlen moves into full guard.
Jones stopping the sweep attempt from Ruehlen.

Jones gets to his feet - Ruehlen follows without any prompting.
James J Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
No joy there for Ruehlen, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Ruehlen connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

and Jones counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Jones works his foot free and advances to mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Jones lands a heavy elbow.

Ruehlen can't escape the position.
Jones controlling the position easily from mount.
Ruehlen tries to lock up and control but Jones gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Ruehlen is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Jones putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Ruehlen trying desperately to get to his feet.
Ruehlen is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Jones trying to control but Ruehlen is having none of it.

Jones working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Ruehlen turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Jones off and cradles Ruehlen's limp body as Jones celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:27 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). James J Jones!
