PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Nightmare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Simon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Simon has chosen Down With The Sickness as his entrance music. Steve Simon is staring across the ring at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jack Nightmare!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Steve Simon!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nightmare swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Simon wants to clinch up but Nightmare keeps it at a distance.

Simon shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Nightmare is squirming around, avoiding Simon's attempts to control the action.
Nightmare trying desperately to get to his feet.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Simon tries to control but Nightmare wriggling away.
Simon throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Simon stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Simon drives through and clinches with Nightmare against the ropes.
Simon tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Nightmare is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the ropes.
Simon goes for a takedown in the clinch but Nightmare prevents it.
Simon keeps control of Nightmare as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Simon has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Nightmare avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Nightmare wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Simon has him pressed against the ropes.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Simon moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Simon not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Nightmare avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Nightmare gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Nightmare tries to clinch but Simon moves out of range.
Nice sprawl there from Nightmare as Simon shoots in.
Nightmare closes the distance looking to clinch
and Simon counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Simon has managed to clinch.
Simon stalling in the clinch but Nightmare improves position.
Nightmare wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Nightmare gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Simon.
Simon tries for a takedown but Nightmare manages to get underhooks.

Simon tightens his grip and picks Nightmare up, before dumping him to the ground. Nightmare manages to land in guard.
Simon wants to control from the top but Nightmare keeps moving.
Simon passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Simon looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Nightmare is avoiding damage well.
Simon working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Simon thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Simon in side control lands a decent elbow.
Nightmare is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Nightmare gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Simon looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.


Simon moves in looking to clinch but Nightmare pushes him off.
Nightmare closes the distance but Simon moves to the side

and Simon counters with a single leg into guard. Nightmare didn't expect that.
Simon in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Simon trying to control but Nightmare is working from the bottom.
Simon forces his way into half guard.

Simon looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Simon has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Simon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nightmare keeps working.

Simon passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Nightmare!
Nightmare holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Simon tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Simon with shots to the head and body - Nightmare looks very uncomfortable down there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Simon controlling the pace for now.
Steve Simon has got the better of the ground game so far.

Simon is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Nightmare is surviving well by controlling Simon's body position as best he can.

Simon working for a submission but Nightmare is keeping him at bay.

Simon goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Nightmare turns into him and now he's in Simon's guard.

Simon escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nightmare gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Nightmare has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Simon is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Simon bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Nightmare's guard.

Steve Simon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Nightmare lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Nightmare forces Simon back against the ropes and clinches.
Simon drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Nightmare gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Nightmare prevents the takedown attempt.
Nightmare tries to break the clinch but Simon is controlling the position.
Nightmare is trying to break free.
Nightmare gets underhooks to prevent Simon's takedown attempt.
Jack Nightmare has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steve Simon.
Simon tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Nightmare smiles and moves away.
Nightmare lands a nice shot that snaps Simon's head back.
Nightmare feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Simon sprawling to the canvas! Simon rolls over backwards and springs off the ropes and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Nightmare finish him?!


Simon is rocked!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Simon pushes Nightmare up against the ropes in a clinch.

Simon breaks the clinch.
Simon moves in looking to clinch but Nightmare pushes him off.

Simon scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Simon wants to pass the guard but Nightmare is defending well.
Simon takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Nightmare is looking to escape.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Simon moves nicely into side control.
Simon in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Simon is looking to take a break and control but Nightmare is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Simon wants to control for a moment but Nightmare uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Simon is trying to stand up here but Nightmare is controlling him well.

Simon is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Nightmare's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Nightmare's back!

Simon is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Nightmare defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

What can Nightmare do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Simon is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Nightmare up.

Nightmare looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands.
Simon lands punches and elbows.
Nightmare is trying to get back to his feet but Simon has full control of the position and if anything, Nightmare has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Simon throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.

Simon looking to break Nightmare's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Nightmare remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Simon will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Nightmare avoids the strikes from Simon.

Nightmare is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Simon gets his way!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Simon scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Nightmare is looking for a way out.
Nightmare knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Simon on the ground.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Simon's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Simon really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Nightmare.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steve Simon comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Simon winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
