PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Roll (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Scott Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Roll might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Limp Bizkit - Rollin'. Scott Steel will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Roll!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Scott Steel!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Columbo Gatti and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Roll shoots in and bounces Steel off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Roll stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Steel swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Roll looking to sit in guard and control but Steel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Steel slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Roll is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Steel off and has taken his back!
Roll misses with an elbow to the head.
Steel trying to control the hands but Roll won't let him.
Roll is hanging on to Steel's back as he tries to escape.
Steel avoids the strikes from Roll.

Steel covering up well and avoiding damage.
Steel trying to control the action but Roll just sinks the hooks in.
Steel is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Roll is staying active.
Roll is trying to stick to Steel's back but Steel is turning into Roll. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Roll's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Steel.
Roll wants to sweep here but Steel controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Roll feints and as Steel raises his hands in defense, Roll changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Steel is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Steel wants to pass to mount but Roll is defending the position.
Roll trying to control but Steel postures up.

Steel is trying to control the action in half guard but Roll is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Steel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Roll is just riding it out for now. Steel eventually gives up the hold.

Roll is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Roll is breathing heavily.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Roll shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Steel pinned against the cage. Steel gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Steel is looking to land body kicks.
Scott Steel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Steel is looking to clinch.
Steel keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Steel shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Roll decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Steel's guard.
Steel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roll wants to pass the guard but Steel is keeping the position.

Steel is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Steel is working for a kimura but Roll is defending it quite comfortably.
Steel is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Steel connects with a nice short shot to Roll's temple.
Steel is trying to control the action in half guard but Roll is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Steel in particular looking to stall.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Despite being in the dominant position, Scott Steel just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Roll decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Steel's guard.
Roll stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Steel swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Steel lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Roll!

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Steel in particular looking to stall.

Steel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Roll is just riding it out for now. Steel eventually gives up the hold.

Steel stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Roll to get to his feet.

and Roll counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Roll.
Roll won't allow Steel to get back to his feet.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Roll accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Roll loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Roll works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Roll lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Roll prevents Steel from improving his position.
Roll trying to control from half guard but Steel is working away.
Steel is trying to stand.

Roll prevents Steel from standing back up.

Roll is looking for a kimura here.
Steel is looking to control Roll's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Steel avoid being mounted?

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Steel changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Roll tries to avoid it but Steel manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Roll to the ground. Roll escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Steel wants to stand up but Roll has a hold of him and won't allow it.

A close second round but Scott Steel will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Roll is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Steel has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Roll goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Steel turns into him and now he's in Roll's guard.
Roll is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Roll is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Roll manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Roll cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Steel is in a horrible position here. Roll smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Steel is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Roll with shots to the head and body - Steel looks very uncomfortable down there.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Roll breaks from Steel's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Roll is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Steel can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Roll cracks Steel with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Steel is bucking up trying to escape but Roll cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Mike Roll showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Roll has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
