PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Demian Villa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Angel Soto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Angel Soto will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Demian Villa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Angel Soto!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Villa closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Soto tries to roll over but Villa keeps him under control.
Villa trying to mount his opponent but Soto defends it.
Soto moves into full guard.
Soto manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Villa manages to get himself to full guard.
Soto trying to control the position from guard on top but Villa is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Villa lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Soto!

Villa goes for an armbar but Soto turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Soto.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Soto avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Villa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Soto doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Soto manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Villa escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Soto gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That was a close round but I would say that Demian Villa will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Soto shoots in but no luck this time.
Villa fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

and Soto connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Villa fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Soto sprawls well initially but Villa persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Villa is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Soto has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Villa is working away from the top position though.

Villa is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Soto tries to roll over but Villa keeps him under control.

Villa is working for a kimura but Soto is defending it quite comfortably.
Soto is looking to improve his position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
The fighters circle momentarily. Soto darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Nice sprawl there from Soto as Villa shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Demian Villa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Villa shoots and misses

and Soto counters with a nice double leg into side control. Villa won't be happy with that.

Villa looking for a sweep but Soto has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Villa is desperately trying to improve his position but Soto has a good base and remains in mount.

Villa really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Soto has control of Villa's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Villa regains control of the situation pretty easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Villa sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Soto works his foot free and advances to mount.
Villa looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Villa is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Angel Soto showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Soto accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Soto is fighting to break Villa's control of his arms but Villa is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Soto might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Villa kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Despite being in the dominant position, Angel Soto just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Villa closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Soto to the mat! Soto manages to get full guard.

Villa drops back, looking for a kneebar! Soto looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Soto looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Soto!

Angel Soto comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Soto has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
