PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jason Garcia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julito Vega (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Garcia might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Here comes the hotstepper. The key to victory for Jason Garcia has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jason Garcia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Julito Vega!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Daniel Franklin and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vega drives through with a takedown into guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Vega is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Vega won't allow Garcia to sweep him here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Vega postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Garcia is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Vega, into his guard.

Vega has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Garcia can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Vega is looking for a triangle here but Garcia uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Vega gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Julito Vega will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Vega counters with a shoot takedown. Garcia fights it but they end up in guard.

Vega drops back, looking for a kneebar! Garcia looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Garcia looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Garcia!
Vega manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Vega looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Garcia stalling away here and it's allowed Vega to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Garcia wants to control from the top but Vega keeps moving.
Garcia is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Vega is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Vega shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Garcia counters with a nice double leg into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jason Garcia will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Vega shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Garcia napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Vega swings around for an armbar but Garcia sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Vega's guard.
Garcia has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Vega is looking for a triangle but Garcia pushes his legs off easily.
Garcia works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Garcia working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Vega's thigh. Vega counters though and makes it back to full guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Garcia wants to take a breather but Vega is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Garcia wants to pass to mount but Vega is defending the position.
Garcia not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

And that's the end of the fight!
Julito Vega comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Vega has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
