PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Freddie Mercury (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Raul Pendragon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Freddie Mercury!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Raul Pendragon!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercury on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Pendragon. Pendragon obviously looking to wear him down.
Mercury checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
A nice leg kick lands there from Pendragon.

Pendragon moves into the clinch.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Pendragon creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Mercury takes an elbow to the forehead.


It looks like Freddie Mercury has been cut.
Pendragon has a couple of punches blocked by Mercury.

Mercury is trying to trip Pendragon. He has hold of a leg but Pendragon is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mercury persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Mercury is pushing down on Pendragon's leg trying to pass to half guard. Pendragon is fighting to maintain full guard but Mercury has managed to sneak the leg through.

Pendragon is pressing down on Mercury's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Mercury connects with a couple of short punches.

Mercury is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mercury cracks Pendragon with a solid left hand.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mercury accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mercury is looking to work some ground and pound but Pendragon has wrist control.

Mercury drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pendragon manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Mercury has Pendragon in his guard.

Mercury is breathing heavily.
Mercury manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Mercury lands a big shot there that rocks Pendragon but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Mercury wants to finish this one by submission but Pendragon is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Mercury.

Pendragon tries to hold on but Mercury pushes him away.
Mercury tries to control but Pendragon wriggling away.

Mercury lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Pendragon hang on?

Mercury goes for an armbar but Pendragon turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Pendragon.
Pendragon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mercury. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Pendragon is looking to advance position but Mercury won't allow it.
Mercury has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mercury tries to get to full guard but Pendragon has control of the leg.
Mercury slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Mercury bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pendragon's guard.

Mercury drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mercury jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Mercury loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Pendragon wants to sweep here but Mercury controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mercury lands a couple of elbows.
Mercury wants to control from the top but Pendragon keeps moving.

Pendragon is looking for a triangle but Mercury pushes his legs off easily.
Mercury loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mercury tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Mercury is looking to clinch.
Pendragon throws a head kick that misses.

Mercury throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Pendragon was covering up waiting for the punch and Mercury finishes the takedown easily into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Pendragon circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pendragon slaps away a takedown attempt from Mercury, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Pendragon fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Mercury.
Mercury misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Pendragon throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
No joy there for Pendragon, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
No luck for Mercury with that takedown attempt.

Pendragon darts in and clinches Mercury up against the cage.
Pendragon unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Mercury throws a knee to the head but misses.
Pendragon landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Pendragon pushes off an throws an elbow but Mercury leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Pendragon misses with an elbow strike.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mercury jumps guard.
Pendragon must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Pendragon tries to free his leg and advance position but Mercury is retaining full guard.

Pendragon wants to control from the top but Mercury keeps moving.
Mercury is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Mercury is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Pendragon can't fight it off and eventually Mercury manages to take the fight to the floor. Pendragon looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Mercury stands up over Pendragon, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mercury connects with a nice short shot to Pendragon's temple.
Mercury is trying to control the action in half guard but Pendragon is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Mercury lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mercury shoots in looking for a takedown. Pendragon tries to sprawl out of it but Mercury keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Pendragon manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Freddie Mercury seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pendragon lands a head kick. Mercury smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Mercury will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Mercury shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pendragon as he jumps to the side.

With the two fighters working up against the cage, Pendragon just misses with a elbow thrown towards Mercury's brow.

Raul Pendragon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Freddie Mercury is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Mercury had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Pendragon defends it easily.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mercury, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
