PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Kent Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brenno Penna (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penna has chosen APOCALYPSE NOW as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kent Powell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brenno Penna!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Alexandre Firmino and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Powell leaves Penna with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Penna throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Powell was covering up waiting for the punch and Penna finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Penna tries to free his leg and advance position but Powell is retaining full guard.
Powell looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Powell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Penna working for a triangle but Powell defends it easily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Powell accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Powell postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Penna will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Penna looking for a sweep. Not yet Penna, not yet.
Penna lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Powell!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Powell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Powell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Powell shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Powell was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

That was a close round but I would say that Kent Powell will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Powell tries to clinch up but Penna circles away and keeps his distance.
Kent Powell is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Penna wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.

Powell changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Penna tries to avoid it but Powell manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Penna to the ground. Penna escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Penna shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Powell manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Penna drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Powell dives on top into guard.

Powell is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Powell is trying desperately to improve position.
Penna misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Powell bucks up and throws Penna to the side - he's got back to his feet. Great escape!
Powell lands a nice shot that snaps Penna's head back.
Penna swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Powell.
Powell tries to close the distance and clinch up but Penna swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Powell is looking to sweep but instead, Penna has passed into half guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Penna clinches up with Powell and pushes him back against the cage.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Powell is pressed up against the cage. Penna has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Powell down to the mat. Powell avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Penna tries to clinch but Powell moves out of range.

Penna ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Penna no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Powell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Penna swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Powell wants to control from the top but Penna keeps moving.

Penna has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Powell can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Penna has his foot on Powell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Powell works his way back into a safe position though.

Brenno Penna showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Powell feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
