PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dimas Russo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Alvarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dimas Russo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Michael Alvarez!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russo dives in and grabs Alvarez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Alvarez pushes down on Russo's head and hops out.
A left lands for Russo.
Alvarez looks for a takedown but Russo sprawls well.
Alvarez misses with a body shot.
Alvarez defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Russo.
Russo closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Alvarez fails with the takedown
and Russo counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
No joy there for Alvarez, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Russo uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Alvarez.
Alvarez fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Russo manages to avoid it.
A telegraphed right hand from Alvarez misses the target.
Russo moves away from the strike by Alvarez.
Alvarez takes a swing at Russo's ribcage but misses.

Russo drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Alvarez sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Russo works his foot free and advances to mount.

Russo goes for an armbar but Alvarez turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Alvarez.

Russo is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Alvarez defends well.
Alvarez wants to pass the guard but Russo is keeping the position.

Russo had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Alvarez defends it easily.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Alvarez jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Alvarez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Russo moves away.
Russo shoots in looking for a takedown. Alvarez tries to sprawl out of it but Russo keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alvarez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Russo manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Alvarez prevents Russo from standing back up.
Russo is refusing to be controlled, as Alvarez sits in half guard.
Still in half guard, Alvarez seems content to control.
Russo is not content to let Alvarez control the position.
Russo wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Russo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alvarez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Russo is trying to defend but Alvarez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Russo shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Alvarez sprawls well. Alvarez wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Russo gets slowly back to his feet.
Alvarez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Russo tries to avoid it but Alvarez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Russo to the ground. Russo escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Alvarez shoots in for a takedown but Russo shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Alvarez rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Russo moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alvarez postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Russo is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Alvarez, into his guard.

Alvarez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Russo wants to control from the top but Alvarez keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Russo goes for a takedown attempt but Alvarez pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Alvarez digs a good body shot into Russo's ribs.
Alvarez just misses with a punch to the body.
Alvarez moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Russo changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Alvarez tries to avoid it but Russo manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Alvarez to the ground. Alvarez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Alvarez remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Alvarez goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Russo has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Alvarez but great work by Russo.

Alvarez has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Russo is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Alvarez.

Michael Alvarez is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Alvarez has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

and Russo holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Alvarez has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Russo avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Alvarez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Russo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Alvarez is tightening it up a little... Russo has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Russo reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Russo taps out! nice BJJ there by Alvarez!
