PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Thaddeus Reese (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reese comes to the cage accompanied by BAMA Boyz-Sweet Home Alabama. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thaddeus Reese!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Peter Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Alan Glass and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cortez misses with a low kick.
Reese misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Reese has Cortez up against the cage in a clinch.
Reese with a knee to the head.
Reese tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Cortez has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Reese avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Cortez is pressed up against the cage. Reese has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Cortez down to the mat. Cortez avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Peter Cortez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cortez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Reese.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Thaddeus Reese. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Cortez lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Reese has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Reese and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cortez just misses with a punch to the body.
Cortez throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Reese throws a head kick that misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cortez staying out of range there.
Cortez is looking to clinch.
Cortez tries to land a leg kick but Reese saw it coming and moves away.
A shot to de liver by Cortez. Beautiful body shot.
A looping hook to the body misses from Cortez. Reese does a little dance to reset his feet.
Cortez swings for the body but Reese moves out of range.
Reese wants to clinch up but Cortez keeps it at a distance.
Cortez throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

Cortez has Reese up against the cage in a clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cortez wants a takedown.
Reese is pressed up against the cage. Cortez has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Reese down to the mat. Reese avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Cortez connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Reese tries for a takedown but Cortez sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Cortez throws an overhand right that lands on Reese's shoulder, as Reese tries to avoid the shot.
Reese moves out of range of the body kick from Cortez.
Cortez tries to clinch but Reese moves out of range.
Cortez misses with a series of wild punches.
Cortez pivots, looking for a leg kick but Reese is out of range and Cortez settles back down.
Reese tries a head kick but it misses.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reese swinging wildly here.
Cortez avoids the head kick by Reese.
Cortez tries to close the distance and clinch but Reese swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Cortez shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Cortez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Reese is just riding it out for now. Cortez eventually gives up the hold.
Cortez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Cortez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Reese's head.
Cortez uses his free foot to push down on Reese's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Reese.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cortez trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Cortez is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Reese is surviving well by controlling Cortez's body position as best he can.
Reese swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Cortez dominating with strikes here.
Reese is squirming around, avoiding Cortez's attempts to control the action.
Cortez might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Reese kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Reese is in all sorts of trouble here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Reese throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Reese is looking to get to half guard.
Cortez cracks Reese with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Cortez dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Reese shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Cortez counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Cortez throws a head kick that misses

and Reese counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Reese working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Cortez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Reese defends it easily.

Reese has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Cortez to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Reese is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Cortez pulls down on the head and he's put Reese to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:46 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Peter Cortez!
