PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mick Newton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Conner Magavin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Newton kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Jay-Z - Encore. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mick Newton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Conner Magavin!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Reed Andrews and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newton tries to clinch but Magavin is having none of it.

Newton drives through and clinches with Magavin against the cage.
Newton stalls.
Newton wants a takedown.
Newton has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Magavin avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Newton manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Magavin escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Newton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Horrible takedown by Newton or perhaps it was just good defense by Magavin which made him look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mick Newton. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Magavin stuffs the takedown.
Magavin jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Magavin slaps away a takedown attempt from Newton, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Magavin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Magavin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Let's hope that Magavin has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Newton is in a horrible position here. Magavin smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Magavin is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Newton has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Newton on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Newton tries to get out of the position.
Newton can't escape the position.
Newton is working hard here to advance position.

Magavin trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Magavin goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Newton is on top in guard.

Newton drops back, looking for a kneebar! Magavin looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Magavin looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Magavin!
Check out the look on Magavin's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Magavin working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Newton can't do much from the bottom here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Newton is pushing Magavin's head away, looking to escape. Magavin manages to hold on to the position though.

Magavin tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Magavin has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Newton tries to improve position but can't.
You can see the frustration on Newton's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Newton is trying to improve his position.
Magavin takes a little break here. Newton wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Magavin fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Newton avoids it really well and circles away.
Magavin looks gassed!
Newton takes one to the chin there.
Newton misses with a takedown attempt
and Magavin counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

Magavin shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Newton napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Magavin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Newton is looking for a sweep.
Newton wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Conner Magavin dominated that round.
That's time! Newton's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Magavin pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Newton misses with a takedown

and Magavin counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Magavin prevents Newton from improving his position.
Newton trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Magavin manages to pass to mount!
Newton is wriggling around trying to escape.
Newton is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Magavin trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Magavin get's back to his feet.
Magavin is breathing heavily.
Newton tries to clinch up

and Magavin counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Magavin performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Newton is striking from the bottom but he's now found himself mounted! Oh dear - not enough focus on defense there.
Conner Magavin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Newton tries to hold on but Magavin pushes him away.
Magavin prevents Newton from getting the reversal.
Magavin trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Newton is trying desperately to improve position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Newton is trying to reverse the position but instead Magavin has taken his back - oops!
Magavin tries to get the hooks in deep but Newton pushed the leg off.

Magavin is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Newton has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Newton tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Newton knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Magavin on the ground.
Newton wants to control but Magavin is having none of it.
Magavin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Newton is looking to escape.
Newton tries to lock up and control but Magavin gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Newton wants to hold on but Magavin pushes him away.

Newton has given up his back here.

Magavin is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Newton has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Magavin has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Newton taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Magavin doesn't care though - he's delighted!
